WOW! I'm Blown Away!

Started putting up 703 in here. Did a 12' ceiling-wall corner, straddled with 2 x 24 x 48. Added another panel on my left side wall for the RFZ.

I cannot believe how much tighter the room sounds.

And that's only 1/3 of the material!

I got 1" thick 703 and have been doubling it up. It was a bit cheaper that way. I got some fabric at Wal-Mart for $1/yard. Spread the fabric on the floor, laid the 703 on it, wrapped it like a Christmas present and hot-glued the fabric in place. I installed it with four push pins/panel supporting the edges.

Couldn't have been easier!!!

Is your kitchen still your main tracking room? I hope Mrs. apl likes the new decor!

Fart, NO! We moved and there's an extra bedroom plus a loft bonus room. The spare BR is now the music room.

I'll post pix after the LavaLamp and C1 arrive.

Actually, all that stuff's been moved 90° to the right.

Are these in front of your listening area or behind?

I have 7-lineal-feet of gobos 90" tall on either side of my listening position. The tightness of the "sweet spot" is pretty impressive. The room is 10' wide.

I have no treatments behind me. The ceiling goes from 8' to 11'-6 over about 12' or so, and I'm about halfway back from the wall in front of me. Then the room goes back another 12' and the ceiling vaults back to 8' at the opposite wall.

I've thought about putting traps in those corners behind me, but being 18' away at the levels I commonly listen to I'm not sure I would notice any difference.

oh yeah....... did you do the clap test thing in the middle of the room??? In a small bedroom the results should be pretty dramatic after treatment.

That would actually make a good "before/after" clip.

Nobody here pushes room treatment here more than me. This is the first chance I've had to implement it.

Clap test???? Pfffffft....

I'll bring my LMS analysis system home from work and get FRFs from the source to my ears with CALIBRATED B&K mics.

I could type www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html in my sleep. I just did.

If you have the material and patience, you should consider doubling the thickness on the straddling absorbers you have. 4" is about a minimum for a bass absorber to really reach down low.

2" straddling helps as you've heard, but honestly really starts to fall off about 125Hz or so.

More testimony from another person who has just seen (heard) the light! Amazing what a difference, huh?

Love the fact we are both in acoustic bliss right now, but I have to be honest that I'm rooting for the Colts, not da Bears . And you, sir, living in Indy....I'm surprised I spent most of my teen years and quite a few of my adult years in Indy (up until about 7 years ago when I moved to South Florida), that' why the Colt support from my end.

Gonna be a busy place down here a week and a half from now.

Go Colts!! or Bears!!...as long as one of them wins, I'll be happy.

Aren't the Colts from Baltimore?

Why yes, yes they are. And it believe it was in Baltimore that they had their last Superbowl win. '79 wasn't it?

In college, every semester we took a 'field study' to an "architecturally rich" location, and one year it was Balitmore/Annapolis/D.C./Fallingwater. We (the group of students) were up in the observatory of the World Trade Center (I.M. Pei) and an elderly gentleman inquisitively asked about the group we were in. I stated we were on a field study from Indiana and, nice as the old man seemed, I remember him saying, "Indiana, you don't want to say that too loud around here." Of course, that was before they finally got a new team of their own, but was several years after the team had left Baltimore. I still think of that, though. Those Baltimorinianites really didn't take kindly to us Indianer folk.

Go Colts!!! Or Bears!!!

seeker, I never knew the "world trade center" in baltimore's inner harbor was I.M Pei. That's cool. My first job was being first mate on a 54' schooner-- used to run it right into the marina on the far end of the harbor. Full of outward bound kids from the Juvenile Services Dept. of Maryland. They used to show their bullet wounds...

I just built my first two bass traps last night for my 19x30x7 room, but have not yet hung them. They're 4x2x4". 14 more sheets of 703 (actually J-M equivalent) left to hang. I think I need another bundle or two for that low ceiling, tho...

I heard that its good if you wrap the 703 in this batting material..or is it baffling. ( I think its kinda like that fake white snow crap you wrap the base of your christmas tree. ) then wrap the thin cloth on top of that. Not only are you adding some more density to the 703, but it also helps to keep that fiberglass from getting airborn should anyone brush up against the panels or anything like that. Whether this actually is better, I have yet to see because I won't be building mine for another 2 months. I just figured that I would add that part for anyone else who reads this and wishes to make their own.

your post definately makes me eager to bust out some power tools though. ha

[QUOTE=Obi-Wan zenabI]seeker, I never knew the "world trade center" in baltimore's inner harbor was I.M Pei. QUOTE]

In all of it's octagonal glory! And what is the other cool building on the inner harbor...it was an arboretum of sorts, the upper half in glass pyramid construction emulating a sail. Can't remember, but THAT is the one I would guess was Pei-designed, very characteristic of his later design style.

Man, what until you hang those traps. It is one thing to read about it and study up...it is great when you actually hear the difference!!

The only tool I used was a tiny crafty hot glue gun.

The fabric shouldn't allow fibers to escape.

It really made the room sound tight like you said. The added benefit is that band rehearsals sound so nice!
