What are some basic things i need to know to make a good rap demo or record?

No samples. Real instruments. Strings, horns, woodwinds, castanets, all real for the best Sounding rap demo or record.

You don't want to get arrested. In order to rap, you need to talk. Rap means talking, or to talk. For example, you could get a microphone and talk into it. That's rapping or to rap. Always start on one, to get the Rhythm of the rapping to sit with the drum beat and castanets. If you don't know where one is, ask the drummer. If you are using a drum machine, you won't get an answer so you could ask the castanet player or even just guess. If it's wrong, people will call it art.

Basic hardware would include a microphone and some kind of recording device. The only software you need is available on the web here.

Look... I'm sick of wanna be rappers, who want to become a rapper case it's cool, or they sit there and think you HAVE to lay x down to be able to rap, and how you can rap. Hip Hop & Rap is just like any other genre of music.

If the music calls for it, hell I'll lay a whole orchestra down for a hip hop track. Mic drums too if I wanted 'that' sound, or use samples if I wanted to use that sound too. There's no special 'mic' for rap vocals, there's no 'special' effects that you need, or special tools for that matter. I use EVERY tool I need to make ANY track whether it be hip hop or rock, to make the final product sound better.

Now, for me, I have the instruments laid on a single track already, or separate track, whichever floats your boat. This can be done on a synth, live, or sample driven. Then I proceed to mix those instruments down and make the sound decent enough, before laying down the vocals. Maybe 10-15 vocal tracks, maybe 5 vocal tracks, depending on the artist style of music. Do like everything else, mix the whole project down, add this and that to the mix, time some reverb into the snare's, whatever the case may be. Your question if serious, should have been making a demo, what goes into it. Nothing just applies to 1 genre of music man.

I'm familiar with walters. He's plural, and this is pretty much the only recording board he hasn't been banned from yet. I think someone like Fletcher may have called him the Fantastic New Superhero of the Current Economic Slump (taken from Frank Zappa's Billy The Mountain) at some point.

Even for the most basic rap demo, you will need to spend money, particularly on drums. You will want to get the highest quality drums. Don't skimp on toms and make sure you get two kicks.

You'll also want fender strats with tons of fuzz. I recommend Ibinez distortion pedals and single state Crate amps. Avoid tube amps at all costs.

Record with the gain settings maxed out using three condenser mics-one pointed towards the amp, one pointed towards your guitar, and one pointed towards the ceiling. If you live in a studio apartment or your parents basement, then you can record direct using a first generation pod, or connect from the speaker out of your amp directly into your tascam four track.

Bass- NEVER record direct. Plug it into a beginner's guitar amp.

Sing your vocals into a Sure SM57. The good thing about rap is that you won't need a pop filter or wind screen, as your plosives and sibilance will fill in any rhythmic gaps.

to walters: I'm sorry, but I feel bad for you. Are you foreign, extremely young, or mentally challenged? That may come off horrid, but I've read a lot of your threads and they hurt my head. Try using punctation and break up your sentences. Maybe you are translating everything in your head, but the least you can do is put in periods between sentences, and read over every post you make to be sure it makes sense. And before clicking post, try to eliminate some of the questions. It seems you make some good questions, and then you ask something ridiculous like "how do i rap?"
