Please excuse my naivity, but can some one explain the diffenent components of a compressor? I have two and really don't know how to set them. What should I be looking for on my gain reduction meters?

Compressors are pretty complicated to understand at first. Some of them use different technologies to do the same thing. Buy a good book on the subject that goes into some depth.
I was very intimidated when I got one, but you just have to jump in and start using them and trust your ears and make a few mistakes. |

I'm with ya John... I'm trying to get a handle on compression also and am finally making some progress!!!
There is a compression article written by Ed Rei (sonusman) on this website but I couldn't find it now. He explains what each "knob" does and makes it very easy to understand. I have it printed out at home, so if nobody beats me to it I'll post a link to it later. This article also helped me. http://homerecording.about.com/music...ks%2FHutch.htm Hope this stuff helps you too. pavement |

Also, this months edition of Electronic Musician has a great article on compression. Went a long way towards helping me understand it.
Never mind, Link above explains just as well. Guess I shoulda read that first. :-) |
