Has anybody painted a kit?

Has anybody ever painted their own kit or is it smarter to buy a wrap kit? I can never leave well enough alone and have been contemplating this for a bit

I painted an old 4pc. Rogers kit years ago (actually French Polished, not painted). It looked good, but took forever. Care must be taken (especially with older drums), that you do not seperate or chip plies while removing the old finish, especially if you are not planning on using wraps. Personally though, I'd recommend wraps, as they are way less work to apply, and even a first timer can get results that can look spectacular.

Where do you find the wraps? From the manufacturer or does anybody make generic wraps?

I've never painted/stained a kit but I also was contemplating it. It looks like quite the project. I saw how they do it over at the DW factory it looked fun..But from what I've read and whatnot to do it yourself would cost a bunch of money, not to mention you better have the skill needed. Probably better to have a Pro do it.

Here is how DW does it

Ya I think the wraps are the safer way for me to go anyway. Snareskinz.com has some pretty deadly designs too

Wraps would definitely be safer.

I like painting though.

C'mon Crankz, you're just showin' off .

What hasnt been said, is what type of kit is involved and what it's current finish is, this would probably give a ckue to what type of timber has to be dealt with.

What's the current finish on the drums?

And what do you mean by "paint"...like a solid color or metallic color or more like a translucent finish?

Thanks!
Now if I could just find the time to wet sand and buff the rest of the shells.
With any luck, I'll be able to hit em all before I'm 40.

One thing I'd like to stress to anyone contemplating painting with Urethanes or any solvent based product ..... SAFETY people! Some of these chemicals (isocyanate's specially) can mess you up for life.

Trust me .... I know

the drums I was thinking of painting are just a low end set of Orbitones made by Taye. I actually like the color of them I just can never leave things alone and was thinking of experimenting with them.
Here is the best picture I could find of them quickly
