Mars

This isnt close to done. The final will have a zillion real strings, this is a test drive. This sucker is beyond enormous. I am looking for any comments that will guide me in the right direction before I go on, this is gonna take a long time.

This was one huge mixdown . I cant imagine how big it will be when I finish. I'm frightened, hold me.

Mars, test drive

Music by Holst until I ruined it.

Amazing playing David.......
This is a loud piece as mentioned. It's also a big piece - even without the strings you will be adding later. Horns, B3, strings all sound great. I see/hear you're doing lots of drums in this. Sounds good. There are so many great parts in this that it is tough to comment on them all. There is one part towards the end where the snare is playing with the strings that is incredibly powerful.
So far,so good (excellent actually ) ...

Its heavily sequenced, quantized, notated, regurgitated etc. I did play a lot of the da-da-da-da da da-da-da stuff though. Actually its a mix of sequencing and playing. Most of the trumpets are played by a human. Maybe just not at that speed/

I'm not sure what that means. I dont really have track lists. There are over 50 on here. I dont label them very well. There are a bunch of brass tracks, each doubled by various synths. There are two hardware synths and one softsynth on this thing. There are a LOT of da-da-da-da tracks, maybe 15 that are submixed or will be soon. There is a lot missing, it needs more percussion. The strings are basically another whole piece by themselves, I will do them in groups and import large groups. Right now it's a big mess, and my monitors are officially shot. It's a giant blur.

Maybe it's better called a channel list? You've got over fifty parts so far?

Holy Mars Bar Batman.
David, what did you lay down 1st?
It does have somthing of a filmic/sci fi style at this point. In the synthness of it - film (& shonky TV) being the only outlet for so much experimental music.
I love the martial pushes. Perhaps a little touch of the propagandized catalogue from 36 - 45?
Excellent work - you woldn't want to develop short term memory probs.

I'm digging it! Can't wait to hear how this progresses.

While I was at your Soundclick page I checked out a few of the others tracks there. I really enjoyed "Anitra's Dance" though I'd say it was more akin to Walter/Wendy Carlos than an " expe[r]iment gone horribly wrong."

Thumbs up

Wow.

The only thing I can offer is that the opening drum sound needs some beef to it. ... It just sounds too samply.

The planets is a piece that my mother played for me a lot as a child. This is really nice.

I bet you can hear the whole thing as you're laying down the first track, too.

Nice work, man.

Thanks Ray, Norman, S. Creep.

David, what did you lay down 1st?
The Framework. How many measures, time changes, basically a sketch. There are several time changes and its in 5/4 and 5/2, but the ending is funky. there is also a drum machine in every of my pieces that you never hear.

Thanks, but that one is toast The new version will be mainly violin.

Quote:

The colegno is missing. Colegno is when the violinist smacks the strings with the back of the bow, the wood part. Its an eerie sound, and that will make the Rhythm for the first two minutes.

Wow, it sounds huge even on these PC speakers.

David when you record orchestral type instruments, do you need to use much/any EQ or do they naturally sit nicely amongst themselves?

Alot of the time I get disheartened here because I hear something that is BEYOND good...and I think, 'jesus, I'll never be able to come up with anything like that.'' Now is such a time. Can't wait to hear the finished piece!

David, this is beyond impressive.

Especially, all the moving parts come together like a huge symphony is sitting around playing this.

It has a big sound. I dig it even like this. Without redoing anything.

Very soundtrack'ish and wow very cool. You should do a movie soundtrack for a thriller or a war movie. Seriously. FS is right about warriors.

Thanks Bulls hit, Telepaul, Bubba, Big Willz.

Quote:

I use a few basic presets. This track will need some bass, a better patch and some sort of bass boost. When I add the violins I will do a serious high end cut on them. Thats mainly it.

My goal in this genre is to have some hybrid between emulative and abstract. I dont want the Tomita sound but I dont want to imitate the symphony either. Hopefully it will sound more like people playing music when i add the strings. It's too midi-sounding right now.

I like it because it has good melody that is easy to sing along to... the vocals are easy to hear, it makes you wanna tap your feet, and it has a bunch of those fiddles in it with some backing tracks from Lurch.

so... this is a childhood fantasy come true to do these old pop tunes, eh?

I'd really like it when I hear the dissonance in some of your compositions.... ya know that stuff that gets tomatoes airborne, and stuff like that.... Bartok-ish, etc....

Nice peep show. Should be nice.
