I think it all sounds really great...the snare seems far back...but it didn't seem like the hook had come around so...maybe the snare comes up with the hook??

thanks guys for taking a listen.
jamesduysen, I have a tendency to position Snares back some. I like a big snare sound and I probably push a bit too much. If I had vox to balance the mix it would probably come down and forward some. today, I just received the SVX Bass plugin. man this is one comprehensive plugin. til now, I've mainly used a Sans Amps Bass Driver DI, but I can see the BDDI taking a back seat... Eeesh! I'm lovin' this sound! It's way too easy to get a muddled sound just with 3 instruments playing heavier (usually the overdrive kills); you've avoided that completely. Reminds me of the 'Pantera' sound which most bands can only dream of achieving.
Did you double the guitar? That's a thick sound! Very, very nice!

out of interest, what did you do to achieve that snare sound exactly?

mic'd with an i5 on top. then some EQ to bring out the pop and body, a bit of compression and some reverb. IMO there's nothing better than a good snare and kick with really thick guitars. thanks again. |

I'd be forced to really learn the tune...but here's another version using the Ampeg SVX Bass Amp plugin. This is really one slick plugin... Stream: No Love Lost with Ampeg SVX Bass Plugin Download |

Sounds awsome and Heavy. Some of the tones you guys come up with make me want to lock you in my closet so I can bribe you with half a day old tuna sandwich when I need your help getting a sound.......... Not ahh that i'd,,,, do anything like that
Great job Sonixx. Only nit' I could possibly say is that maybe a hair more presence in the guitar might sound nice. As is I love it. Just thinking of if vocals kick in and stuff. All depends on what else happens in the song. F.S.

My god I would kill for that guitar sound.
Whats your guitar setup and mic-chain and did you do layering/processing? I'm always struggling for that fat guitar sound :s Could you up a small fragment of the guitar track?I also have a 4* G12-T75 case but I'm unable to accomplish that sound ![]() Nice sound (Btw guitars in first clip sounded a bit better ) |

I'll be glad to put something up, but I'm not sure what you're after (as tracked, as mixed...) the chain is EMG81 5150 Ch2 G12T-75 SM57 no transformer no layering other than one gtr track per side and the bass gtr (very important). IMO, fitting the bass gtr tone as an extension of the gtrs is the cat's meow. you stated you liked the gtr tone in the 1st clip better, probably you actually like the bass gtr tone better. the 1st clip's bass gtr tone is a bit thinner. the 2nd clip is a bit more puffy. I don't recall changing the gtr other than levels. maybe I did brighten it a tad... not sure. the gtr tracks are EQd somewhat. to get that in your face presence, but the original tone is pretty thick. this advice from Colin Richardson posted on UtlimateMetal.com is worthy... I usually find when mixing that i nearly always put a stereo Massenberg GML 8200 EQ across the rhythm guitars, if the sound has been recorded cleanly ie no strange fizz or bottom end boom, then the same type of frequencies tend to be boosted on most of my mixes. Frequency wise it's usually around 8-10 khz for the air 4-6 khz for the bite area, usually 1.5 khz for the in your face effect, 400hz for the note of the guitar, and around 70-100 hz to pick out the weight of the cab.The boost amount just depends on what has been recorded, just turn it till it sounds good. This method has worked on many albums i have worked on including Heartwork Carcass, Burn my eyes Machine Head, Chimaira self titled, Bullet for my valentine, The Poison. Yeah the mix sounds good.
But the "stadium rock" sounding snare is taking the attention away from the rest of the mix. You could bring the snare down a bit and take some reverb off or use a different sample. Nice stuff. Eck |
