Large-Ass Casettes!

Mornin' Dave; the GOD of Analog Machines! Yrs. ago, I bought a casette recorder at a used shop for around $2.50. This thing used a casette that was 4-6 inches long, Huge, but it was an actual machine I used to record some Beatles tunes, double tracking the tracks to an old Craig RtoR. Then back to this huge casette. I probably sold it at a yard sale...do you or anyone have any pictures of a machine like that? Thanks for the memories, Dave...I mean, Bob

Are you talking about a machine that uses RCA cassette cartridges?

http://www.richardhess.com/notes/for...25-cartridges/

Or maybe the Sony Elcaset system?

Quote:
In the mid-1970s, Sony introduced the Elcaset which used a dedicated 1/4″ cassette with essentially the 4-channel configuration, although there was provision for (I believe never implemented) two data tracks in the middle, and the machine recorded pair-wise stereo tracks, rather than interleaved like all the other formats. Only a few thousand of these machines were made, and the last 2,000 were sold off in Finland at fire-sale prices between 1979-1981.
Here's a Sony EL-7. Tascam made an Elcaset model, too.

Sorry guys, that's not big enough. This machine used casettes about 3.5" high by 4-6" long. I can't remember if it had the Magic Eye or not. Looked just like a regular casette, but a lot bigger. Thanks, I'll keep searching!

Arrow That's the size of the Elcaset,...

though it may not look that big in the pictures.
Quote:
It was also much bigger than a compact cassette: 15 cm wide, 10 cm high and 2 cm thick.
15cm (5.9") x 10cm (3.9") x 2cm (0.78")

Slowrider i think i may have found something that might be what your looking for

I found this while searching....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...7017&rd=1&rd=1

This machine according to the pictures takes what looks to be an 8 Inch cassette.

I am going to ask the seller if it is tape or cassette and i will let you know what i find out

Hope this helps

Unless I missed it, I didn't see anything in that link that indicated what the size of that cassette was but it did appear to be a proprietary design for that type of machine?

Cheers!

Hi fm

I asked about the cassette size and here are the details.

It takes a cassette, 4.2in x 2.9in (10.5cm x7.5cm).

This is quite an unsual machine and not the type that i have seen before.

And a web search has revealed that it may be possible for this machine to also accomodate 3in tape reels.

So i might grab it and see

Keith

Thumbs up

Thanks, guys for the info. The actual machine was twice that size, maybe? Damn, now I wish I still had those old machines. At the time; who knew there would be an Internet to look up information?? Not me...I hate computers!
