fostes model 80 with tascam 688??

Hey Guy s,
First of all: thanks for everybody for the advice on a mixdown desk (i'm gonna go with a cd-rw recorder if I have the money). Another difficult question.
I'm getting a fostex model 80 recorder that comes with the fostex 812 mixer. I always worked with the tascam 688 (cassette portastudio) and I just love the way it works (routing/eq etc). The 812 is unformilliar to me, so I'm wondering if I can use the 688 as a mixing desk. It has 8 group outs so recording will be easy I guess. But for mixing a song that has for example 8 tracks I'm not sure. Can I just plug the cables from the recorder out to the inputs of my tascam?? And should I use the xlr inputs or the line inputs? Is this idea do-able at all?
I know it's a strange question but please help me out if you can...

btw. I can always learn how to use the 812, but I'm not used to working with subgroups, I just want to have one fader on one track as I am mixing (down)

The 812 will work just fine. Once you get it and play with it a little you will find it to be the best way to go with the 80.
The sub groups are mostly used for the recording part and not so much in mixing. But sometimes the subs come in handy for drums.
Each channel of your mixer can be assigned to any of the sub groups so when you mix down you would just asign each channel to group 1 and 2 for your mix down. Its a nice mixer and will save you alot of grief in the recording process.
And as for the faders that is how it is set up 1 track one fader, the faders for the subgroups is set to unity (the grey area) youl see it. and left there till you want to maybe do a fade at the end of the song.

I think you can use your tascam 688 just as a mixer, if you go out of the fostex model 80 into it with a recording snake (rca to 1/4"). I sometimes do the same thing and use the mixer of my Tascam 424 mkIII over my Mackie
