Toms

Would the sound of my toms improve if I replaced the stock resonant heads? I don't really know how integral they are in the overall sound of the drum.

It's a Pacific kit that I use for recording. I don't play live, and I'm not really a drummer, but I can play well enough to record a song.

I really don't know but the probability of the sound changing seems likely. Better is relative.

Stock resonant heads are usually 200 mil heads. Ambassadors are 400 mil.

If you switch, you will increase the sustain of the drum and improve the fundamental tone.

I'm about ready to put up the cash to do it myself. Maybe coated heads on top. I know it will be worth it. All my pro buds do it.

I have a Pacific CX and I'm trying to put up some mulah to upgrade the resonant heads. before I decided to spend all that money (it's a 7 piece) I got ahold of some old ambassadors that I had lying around and put them on a couple of my toms. Even with the pinstripes that I have had for almost a year now, they sounded WAY better. Definately a broader tuning range, better sustain, more natural tone... Just all around better.

I think I am going to ditch the pinstripe/ambassador combo and go with g2 coated/genera resonant combo though.

Definitely do something coated on the top. It's just a nice sound all around.

Reso heads are tough sometimes... it's hard to justify spending money on heads that you'll never hit (although I've been known to flip my snare over and use its reso head). Definitely experiment as you can until you find something you like. I am fortunate to have a few drummer buddies who play out far more often than I do and like to experiment with heads, cymbals, etc. I get first dibs on their sendoffs. One guy does backline for touring bands. When they ask for heads that he doesn't use personally, he'll charge a little extra for the heads, then he'll give them to me when they're done with 'em.

Has anyone tried those Evans EC-2 batter heads? Im thinking about either those or Remo Ambassador coated for my Mapex Pro M, which do you think? I want a nice warm, deep sound with little ring, but a nice sustain.

i've been using the ec-2's since they came out and i love them. they have a lot more attack than i originally thought i would, but they're great. a nice tuning range, good sustain, durable, and they still sound pretty good when they're nearly destroyed. much better IMO than pinstripes which are the remo equivelant, and my new head of choice. and for the record i've tried g2's, g1's, pinstripes, powerstroke 3's, powerstroke 4's, aquarians, attack terry bozzio, and probably a ton of other heads i choose not to remember.
