Felt Strips for dampening?

I just bought some felt strips from the Walmart fabric section and was curious if anybody knew exactly how to place them on the bass drum to achieve that slightly more focused sound and eliminate some of that ring?
Thanks!

What size felt strips we talkin'?

I've always had very good results with the careful placement of a pillow or a tightly rolled towel. Usually I place the dampener just against the head, to kill some ring and also deaden the rebound slightly, which I prefer on the batter side.

i use one 2" felt strip on the batter head running vertically just left of center and two more running horizontally on the resonant head: one on the upper third, one on the lower third. i dont like using anything like pillows or blankets because i like a lot of ring.

On my rock kit I have a 2" strip about 6" right of center running vertically on both the batter and res heads... On my Jazz kit, I'm running a strip horizontally about 4" above center on the batter side only.

Both are 22" kicks, one Maple (rock set) and one Dark Mahogany (jazz set)

As was already stated above, just experiment with your kick until you find the spot that works for the sound you're going for
