Exclamation Strat dating...

okay well i've looked it up, and I dated my american strat when i bought her...the serial number began with E9 and according to fender, that stands for the 88-90 years, probably 89...now my friend wanted me to fix her guitar, and she had the same serial number, began with E9..but i had to take the neck off to fix it for her, and when I did, i noticed that it seems as if the neck is stamped 1983...anyone have any idea about this? i'm clueless!

I don't know anything about it all really, but have you considered the possibility that the neck was manufactured in '83, but wasn't assembled or marketed until 88-90?

Here is a sight about some of the Strats..doesn't have anything about any after '79 that I could see, other than they went back to using a small peg head.

Last year for the "large" peghead. Starting in 1980, Fender switches back to the (more attactive) small pre-CBS peghead style on most models.

Through the years, Fender has used parts which were laying around the factory, sometimes for quite a few years. But really, the only good way to date a Fender guitar is to have the original sales reciept, and even that is only moderately useful sometimes. They have never been very good about date issues.

I'd take your question over to the fender forum

http://www.fenderforum.com/

There is a subforum on Strats and dating them is a frequent topic. The guys in there are really knowledgeable about the things you mention.
