reason/midi question

i was wondering if any body else had this problem, i have my laptop which runs reason midi to my desktop which runs pro tools, everythings runs and syncs fine until i hit the stop button and let it sit for a moment. thats when i notice latency and drag in my midi points whats going on

Dunno.

Do you mean when you restart your setup the laptop lags behind, then recovers?

Or that the timing is off for good once you stop the machine that's providing the master clock?

yea its off for good, thats my problem i ve been messing with it all day but i still haven't figuered out.

There are several ways to synchronize two computers, but before we get into them tell me what you are doing now.

well my setup im working with is a laptop with a pentium 4/512ram that runs reason with a firewire 410 interface with a 256 samples buffer size, thats midi to my desktop with a pentium 4/512ram that runs my pro tools 7.1 with a firewire audiophile with a 256 samples 256 samples buffer size. i have my pro tools as the master and my reason as the slave.

i have a m-audio axiom 25 thats usb to my desktop, and i have it triggering my midi in reason on my laptop which i record in a instrument midi track in pro tools. everything records fine and plays fine while playback and loop is in process, but as soon as i hit stop and hit play again the latency kicks in and sounds pretty noticeable.

I think what you're identifying as 'latency' is nothing more than the midi tracks shadowing the audio tracks you've already recorded in protools. Midi is a 31.2 kb serial language, which in modern terms is like sending timing data over a dial-up modem with a 31.2k bandwidth. There's always going to be some lag in syncing with midi --- it's just the nature of the beast.

The protools tracks, as audio tracks, are all lined up as you need them right?

My advice would be to try these three things and see which works best for you:

• Get the composition all set in Reason, then dump the audio tracks to pt and disconnect the midi wire
• Put up with the delay, knowing that the final product will be in sync and lined up properly
• Network the computers so that you could actually use the ReWire facilities available in both pt and Reason

man thanks for all the help I think im just going to give up and go back to the way i used to do, midi all my stuff in reason and record to pro tools, but i still have a couple of questions. let say i use a synthesizer plug-in in the instrument rack on pro tools will there be any latency in the playback when i lay down the midi? back in the day i had my mpc 1000 midi to my motif with my mpc being the master and there was hardly no latency, what is the difference in this setup compared to what im tring to do know?

Maybe a tiny bit --- not enough to throw you off.

I've gone back to using my MPC1000 just for the sake of simplicity, lack of crashing and for the pure speed with which I can get around on it.

I use it with a battery of soft synths in a program called energyXT, then record the results to a Yamaha HD recorder. I'm getting more done now that ever before - sometimes two songs in a day.

I love my MPC - I've got it set up with an internal 20 gig hard drive and the 128meg ram expansion and it's a dangerous little machine. Unless you've got a lot of money to throw at the problem I don't think this 'audio on computers' thing is quite worked out yet --- but don't tell anyone else here that I said that. It might get me banned...

yea man i hear ya , i hate i sold my mpc it was so easy to use, i could focus more on music than trying to get shit to work. i was told to get that kind of system to work you need to have a dual processor computer and i can't afford that type of system, but i am going to try to up my ram game from 512-1gig and see what happens. if all else fails i'm save up for 2500 and sell my laptop. thanks for the help
