EZDrummer problem!!

I recently bought the Toontrack EZdrummer software under the impression that it is a standalone program that I can use to create drum tracks. After installing it and not being able to get it to work, I find out that I need something else like ProTools or Acid Pro to be able to use this thing as a plug-in. I really don't have the extra money to invest in all this right now and I can't return my software. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to do??? Thanks!

On the product page for EZ Drummer, it states a plug-in host is required:

Purchase a supported application to use it with is the option you have.

You can use Reaper. Unexpiring shareware and has almost all the features most recording software have.

But I think a better option for you would be:

Cantabile (Free)

or

MiniHost (Free but with nag screen until you donate)

Using reaper or Cantible, you can load MIDI files and run them through EZDrummer to create your drum tracks. Cantible and MiniHost both support MIDI keyboards, so if you have one of those, you can also create them that way.

They have built in WAV recorders.

But I personally use Reaper and EZDrummer because I usually use MIDI files and not a keyboard.

I have midis of my drums already mapped out. How would I go about using EZdrummer through Reaper?

Open Reaper
Click the Insert -> Media File... menu
Select your MIDI file
This should add a new track to the project with the MIDI file on it
Set the project's tempo by typing it in where you see "120.00"

Now, there is a small bug in EZDrummer/Reaper, so in order for it to load the drumkit you have to do this:

Arm the track for recording by clicking the red button on the track

Now, in the track list at the bottom of the screen, to the right of the "Master" track, select your MIDI track, and find the "Record Monitoring" button. Click this so gets turned on.

Now you can assign EZDrummer to the track as an FX.

Click the FX button on the track, and select "VSTi" in the left menu, find the "Dfh Sampler (Toontrack)". This is EZDrummer.

Click OK, and then it should load EZDrummer and the drumkit. Once the drumkit is loaded you can play/render the track as a WAV file.
