Musicians, I just built a site for us to upload music for free..

I've got a new site.. http://www.wemakemusicnotmoney.com and it's all about musicians releasing their music for free for the love of music only! I have provided 150 megs of space to begin with for everyone that signs up. This site will never cost money (I have the webspace donated to me, so no bills)

The community has just started so help me grow it!

I hope to get this site big so everyone can enjoy music and host a community of musicians..

Tell me what you think and I can make the accomodations.

WOW, I guess you didn't even look. Yes, its in a BBS format but that is because I strain for more user driven content...

You can "enable file uploading" in phpbb, hate to break it to you. I have installed numerous modification to both phpbb and the template.

And that's not the point...

If you look at it that way, homerecording.com/bbs is just a phpbb installation, but it's the aura, the topics, the community around it that make it what it is... and that is what I am trying to build.

It's not about the techonology.. it's about the communities and ideas behind it..

Look folks, why is everyone downplaying this idea I put into motion. I know I know its not exactly original, but I wanted to offer something to the music community.

I bet if I have 2000 members and the community was huge, you would look at it differently..

What is homerecording.com/bbs had only 3 members, everyone would brush it off..

But let me tell you, I bet at one time, it did only have 3 members. You've got to start from somewhere.

I am going to keep my head up on this one.. I really want this to become successful. If you don't like the idea or site, then don't join (which I have seen you haven't) and that's fine. I just thought I would pitch it to ya.

If nothing else, he's offering 150meg of free hosting. That should be of some consideration. Especially if he's offering deep linking; sounds like a good place to start rumbles.

The site looks fine. Here's the deal:

1. In this marketing/PR forum, people are looking for ways to SELL their music. We can give it away at a lot of sites.

2. You have no rules posted ( that I saw) about ownership/copyright/downloading etc. I doubt anyone will take it seriously unless you do.

3. We have an mp3 clinic here, with a LOT of members who have been doing it actively for years.

THEREFORE,

think outside the box. You need some special niche or angle to make this go.

2. You say NOTHING about ownership, no legal mumbo jumbo, zilch. People might be into free music, but you have no protections for the artists or yourself.

3. You NEED to. For your sake as well as the musicians. If someone puts up a tune, he might be diggin the free music thang, but if the tune proves popular, somebody is gonna be bitching up a storm. Dont think it doesnt happen, a tune I posted at this forum was picked up by a design company to use in an ad. Think about it...

I don't think I am picking up what you are putting down...

I understand the instant copyright deal. But its the users choice is he/she wants to upload it.

Tell me what I need to disclaim. I know the site's not perfect, and this may be the wrong section to put it in, but I did notice the "publicity" part in the forum title..

Anything and everything. Go to a myspace or soundclick and adapt whatever they have to fit yours. Again, it is for YOUR protection that you have some legal mumbo jumbo, you could be hosting illegal stuff. You have to have rules that say stuff like

Excuse me, but I DID look at it. It's a BBS. Period. It's not a "file sharing service" at all. Lightningmp3 is a file sharing service. No BBS. And, yes, files are limited to 16MB, but how many MP3's are greater than 16 MB???? Not many.

1) do users have to register thru the bbs to upload?

2) can users directly link to their files on other sites? Email? Etc....

Hmm, would you like 16 megs automatically, or 150 and you take two seconds to register for FREE..

And yea., no deep linking.. but the GOAL here is to create a community. I didn't/didn't intend to state it was a pure "file sharing" per say... Which technically IT IS but you have to register...

And what mp3 is more than 16 meg? Tons! How about 30 minute jams @ 320kbs? I DONT intend to limit users on which format (e.g. just mp3 allowed) they can upload.

I shouldn't have to defend myself here. If you don't like it, alright.

But who's better then who is different depending on how you look at it. I say registering in a forum to upload/download music is not all that bad.. especially when you get way more than 16 meg

I am glad you checked it out... If you use all 150 megs and need more, just ask and I'll give you more.. I will not delete any files (unless they are copyright by someone else than you)


I would love to help a member out who has contributed that much to the site..


And I will look into and see if users can delete their own files... seems like they should be able to..

Edit: I have looked into the deleting thing.. Try this: goto your profile, then under your upload quota bar, click "User Attachment Control Panel" then you can check a file to the right and click Delete marked...

If you can't delete a file, let me know. I might have to change permissions..

You get UNLIMITED uploads with lightningmp3. Just a 16 MB limit PER FILE.

My only problem with your site is that you said it was a music upload site. It's a musicians bbs that allows uploading - as do nearly all of them - except this one.

Anyway, good luck with the site. One piece of advice, be careful what you allow to be uploaded. the reason for the mp3 limitation on lightningmp3 is that they can be verified as mp3, and not allow people to upload executable files - you would be surprised what a few jackass's will do to ruin someone generous offer of FREE hosting.

true, true.. I will monitor the uploads...

As a measure of precaution. I have banned certain script and executable extensions..js,pl,cgi.php. I might still have trouble with the packages.. zip,rar,ect.. But I will always monitor the shadowed uploads..

Extensions are pointless. I can rename a javascript to a .mp3 extension, then run it on your server.

I try and monitor all uploads, but you'll quickly find it takes WAY too much time. I have a automated system to alert me to potential problems, and I mainly just looks at those files. It is really sad, that a few people try and ruin it for everyone. I've nearly shut down several times because of them.

Bump, there have been a lot of changes to the site...

Deep linking is now available... that means you can share your files with anyone, even if they aren't a member of the site.

Just another reason to quit hating and join the site to spread your music.

Made some other misc changes to the site.. give it a whirl...
