how about a primus cover?

A funky version of American Life by primus. My cousin played bass and did the vocals on this track (the vocals are bad, so dont pay too much attention to it. its ok in some spots but the bass is great) The Drums are all DFH2, and after we had everything recorded i decided it would be cool to add in some keys. The patch we used on my keyboard sounded nothing like this but it came out that way run through my guitar amp and we decided we liked it.

Seriously though, I thought your version was pretty cool, the recording sounds a bit broken up and distorted to me, it may just be the mp3 encoding though.

yeah on the drums we tried for a brown album sorta sound so we used mostly the ambient mic and compressed it a bunch. we added some compressor to the bass also, and eq'ed the keys a bit. we had 2 vocal tracks, one with a pitchshifter and a chorus, one with just eq. all in all it sounds absolutely nothing like we originally played it but oh well.

Yeah, you know I thought about that Brown Album thing, after I posted it came to mind. Kinda crunchy and cool sounding

Haven't heard this one before. You did a pretty good job on it though. Some interesting production decisions, I think the distortion/breakup thing works well. I like the vocals too

lol yeeeeaaahhhh the the kid couldnt sing his way out of a cardboard box..... well he can do this song really well live but when it comes to this.... no. playing his bass without the amp actually helped him alot though which rather made me think about it. he cant sing without his bass..... most people have the opposite problem. the original song sounds nothing like this at all, and the keyboard decision was made after i was screwing around with it while he was listening to his bass track. we pretty much just looked at each other and thought...... no guitar. at all. i was originally going to play some guitar on this track, and might still, but i kinda think it might make the song too crowded.

Yes, it's a "crunchy" sounding mix, rather unique and cool.....

That vocalist sounds like Geddy Lee in spots, and plays some funky bass parts. Playing bass and singing is an art in itself......

Nice work on the drums too.....

Panning the bass far left and keys far right works amazingly well in this mix.....

thanks for everyone's opinion. anything i should do as far as eq or anything goes? and as far aswork on the drums goes, it isnt that great, being that its just 3 loops repeated over. we noticed afterwards that its kind of hard to notice that it's looped, because the main loop is long and not too repetitive.

Red face Lol

Im the Geddy Lee / Les Claypool wanna be who did those crappy ass vocals. Im getting better at it. You should have heard me try to sing years ago. Ears have bled at the sound of my voice. lol. Im gonna get a good recording of those vocals eventually and clean the bass up. I did that vocal track at like 4 am. lol

I played my 2001 Fender Jazz 5 string through an old kustom 100w head with a 2x12 cab. We used the same for the keys. l Sounds crunchy.

peace guys. Glad you had good things to say about it.

shake hands with beef is actually one of my favorite primus tunes. i cant really do primus stuff with a guitar though, so ill have to keep out as far as that goes.

we are planning on a couple other tunes of Primus. I'm thinking about doing a version of Tube Snake Boogie by ZZ-Top. I think some day I will arrange a similar version of American Life with a horn section. I'm getting my alto-sax fixed as soon as I have cash flow again. And I'm gonna snatch up my gf's trumpet to learn also. It would be nice to get a hold of a trombone and a Bari-sax. oh the joyz i would have.
