Thanx 4 sharing those...hey can you explain how da whole studio thing goes...like what is the selling process like, would most colleges have a studio around somewhere?...And anything else u wana add basically talk to me likd a 2nd grdr. about da studio...ps about how much will it cost to have myown someday and whats da process like...may this thread sky rocket from here

Well, this studio belongs to Dallas Sound Labs (Media Tech Institute), and there are many other colleges out there all around the U.S, that offer whole bunch of different degree's based in music. This place isn't any where close to what Du Paul has to offer, but I live in Dallas, so it's the best choice for me. I paid $17,500 dollars for tuition, and with my bad credit, I pay back $34,000 back. There's many ways to get FREE studio time. Usually students have projects they have to do, and many of them might not know any performers etc, so they bring in outsiders to record (which could be you lol). To build a great studio, you would need at least 5-10 million dollars or more. That's to build the floor's, have studio designers come in and draw you up a floor plan, equipment and all the 9 yards. I'm not a studio designer, or anything, maybe not yet... but that's from what I know about this place and a few other places. In a studio, there's a big need for making the envoirnment & atmosphere comfortable and different. That gives clients etc, inspiration, creativity, and all that other good stuff. The rooms need to awe clients. OH And I do think most colleges have some type of studio in their facilities, being because lots of places have the auditorium which needs sound engineers etc, and theater arts, etc should have some type of sound room. When I worked at Crystal Clear Studios, when we booked say 8 hours, they of course paid a non-returnable 20% or $300 which ever was greater, and the rest whenever they came in. They gave a free engineer for anyone booking 4+ hours. Also the minimum was 2 hours. And prices were basically $75/hr. Mastering was $65/hr (minimum 1 hour or some shit).

Although I said the price of building a great facility (control room & booth/play area) was up in the millions of $$, you can get away with spending a whole lot less, depending on who you want your clients to be, and the market in your area, and other things.... Like in this facility, there's been big names like Pantera, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Erika Badu, and more. If your targeting like the independent places, and artists, you might charge less, and not have so much of a full fledge major studio. You could design the studio itself. I know they spent $10K on each room for the studio designers just to come out and map a great room out. There's a lot that goes into building a full studio & running it. Selection of equipment plays a roll too...Some might say different, but many artists who know nothing about recording, usually come in, and say HEY you got the SSL Console??? not knowing that there's nothing very special about that console & why they love it so much, or they'll come in and if you don't have a Pro Tools setup, they leave... Or if you don't have a Nuemann U-87, they leave.. It's kinda stupid in terms of those people... but I'll write more later, I gotta go hit up the studios & class

I think that a sound booth in your house would be better than recording out in open space, you'll be able to control the sound better with an isolated space. When building it, or anything like that, you should float the floor & if your ceiling is high enough, than hang your ceiling. Also since your into hip hop, a dead room would be ideal. Put up your regular foam & sound traps etc, and all that. That part is pretty simple. To isolate etc, when building the walls, offset your studs, and have them like 24 inches apart from each other. To seal them, you should use rubber caulk compound, and if you put a window up and double layer it, make sure they are not parallel with each other, or you'll have standing waves etc.. So one window can be standing straight up and the other window should be tilted a little bit... ( like this = I\....) Gypsey board (plywood) by itself is poor for trapping sound, so for cost effective solution, you could layer your walls & floors, like on the floor, use like hockey pucks, and place them down so that your floors would be floating, and then make your floors on top of them, add carpet, and maybe some of those hard matts (like ones you find at a gym) in the middle. Some people might disagree with me, some would agree, that's up to you. It's not like we have a hundred thousand to spend on rooms lol. at least I don't yet. For the door into the booth, make sure it's HEAVY, otherwise it'll rattle (that shouldn't worry you too much since it's just a vocal booth, but still do it right the first time lol). After walls and everything's up, just make sure it's sound tight so that no sound from the outside (maybe from your monitors, computers, etc) can come inside the booth. That'll help you get clearer vocals, and that equals to better mixing at the end.

Just whoever knows how to build i guess. You could save money and do it yourself, or go buy the materials, and have like a project for your friends to do. They'll probably do it for free, just to say they helped build a booth that turned into a hit maker lol
