Sampling or Composition
With computer software making it more affordable to get in production would you rather hear more sampling or composed tracks.I'm partial to composing.I like hearing sampled tracks but one day I want to be sampled myself.

i have aways and will aways be for composing...
as more and more stuff comes out and ther realize the potential of money they can make if the keep it original..more and more producers are leading more toward composing to keep all their share of publishing vice giving up 30% or more the the publishing company that own the samples they used..

IMO composing requires more creativity...sampling seems a lil like cheating(kinda) However sampling goes back to the roots...Depends HOW you sample...music iz music!

I dig the sound and feeling in sample based production, but I prefer to compose.
More control, and more possibility. Plus, theres a certain satisfaction that comes with building a beat from scratch.

I agree. I do sample, it's rare, but it happens. It's usually something fairly small too.
The last thing I sampled was a single flute note. but it added a lot to the beat. but yeah, sometimes you hear shit too dope not to sample it. lol.

i ALWAYS sample.
i dont care what yall say but... the way i chop a sample and use it in a beat... might as well be an original composition. i like original compos.... but seriously most producers goin that route sound like ass. either their kits are just plain homo or what... but iono. ill always like sampling IF DONE CORRECTLY. its got that soul/funk/instrumentation/warmth... that you'll never be able to find in a board. plain and simple. i look at sampling as composing in a way... cause you take sounds... and arrange them... just like in original composing. iono how yall sample... but just takin a plain loop and then adding drums... that aint really doin much... but choppin a beat up in a crazy way... and rearranging it... that shit takes a lot of creativity. |

There's also a certain satisfaction in digging through four cities and finally finding some wax you've been looking for, listening to it and feeling its soul go through you, chopping that up, and making a classic.

I'll keep doing both but hopefully we can get to that point where our compositions have that soul feeling to them by layering better sounds and using eq and effects. After we get that down maybe we can make more complex tracks (I'm speaking for myself on that one). You can make a real hot song looping a sample and adding the "right" drums.I got an idea for another thread!!!

But sampling doesn't always have to be physical - to me, what you're talking about is like "spiritual" sampling, where we're able to bring that soulful feeling that we get from records out by ourselves. That's how I think of the production by The Soulquarian's and The Roots, for example.

I think bangin beats can either be made by sampling or composition. I like both. Like def said, i like that kind of sampling where the sample is chopped up so much that it's basically a different song. It's always amazing when you hear the original and your're like, how did they do that? One of my favorite things to hear is sampling and composition combined. If you know what you're doing, that is a dangerous combination. You'll nod so hard your head will fall off!!

I have yet to find a set of keyboard sounds that I have been highly impressed with. With that said I prefer sampled beats. I prefer to sample myself for that reason. I have made composed beats but I am never satisfied wtih the sounds used.
