chimes

looking to sample that sound thats made by running a stick along those metal things , i think its called chimes ? dunno. where could i find this or a song i could sample from. thanks

Hello,
First of all the small ones that hang from a "stick" and get smaller as they go from left to right are called WIND CHIMES. The huge 6 foot brass tubes that you bang with a hammer at the top and sound like Church bells are called "Chimes".
As far as sampling goes... hmmm. I can not think of a modern soung that has ONLY wind-chimes in it. Meaning they are isolated. I can think of a few songs that have wind-chimes in them, but there is something playing behind it. However, if you look toward classical mucis you will find much more. I think that "Watermusic" has many chime parts. Check it out. THey aren't expensive and I am sure you will use them plenty before you die so just go buy a real set. They sound cool and are fun for the kids to play with. You can set them in the bathroom door and when you come out of the bathroom to your wife you can make a glittering entrance tot he love room.

I have never found a convincing sample of "wind chimes" (too many overtones and too long a decay). I am a drummer and own a few sets of "chimes" - they can be purchased at most music stores. You can even buy "consumer" chimes at gift shops etc. Or, you can make your own chimes - steel/brass tubes cut to ascending/descending lengths, however it's a lotta work and time.

If you really need the sound I would suggest looking at music stores. Tree Works make decent chimes costing from $40-$100 (less costly than LP). If you need projection (ie: volumn) look for solid bars rather than hollow tubes (however the hollow tubes provide a lighter sound - better for recording).

When recording, its obviously mostly high end - if you capture too much of the low end you lose the airy sound I assume you're looking for.
