Hello again!
I am planning on a full upgrade mid Jan07 Macbook pro C2D (or macbook if they get upgraded) 2 cheese of ram I will be keeping my FW410 for the sakes of protools (starting AE course) What would you recommend? 1 - Fireface 800 and a pair of KRK RP8 or Alesis M1 620 or Genelec 8020 2 - Motu Traveler + Dynaudio Bm5a (I prefer over Mackies HR824's) 3 - Great holiday @ Bora Bora ... (or your own suggestion) Let me give you some background. Singer songwriter, cant help myself. I tried, didn't work. Will want to pre-produce a "full album" with my band, get some demos out yadda yadda yadda... Dream of working professionaly (eventually, with LOADS of hard work, coffee-making, audio prostitution, etc) in the PP world of cinema, documentary, publicity, tv... I have had a rocket fast climb in the audio world. My ears improved massively due to the imense studio hours I have been through, plus the incredible insight given to me by others in loco. I have become a seriously proficient tracker. But now I am on my own in a small room in another country Appart AE, appart from composing stuff... I really feel the need to be able to throw out funny words like..."...this mix through these pre's are thin and boxy, while through these the lows are rounder albeit edgy high's..." So, in your opinion, where would my learning curve/setup be most beneficial. I have read so much about these two interfaces, I know about the converters and pre's... but still I am SO puzzled... Up to now I have done my own personal mixes through sony hi-fi speakers. I hate them to my gut. I know I know! I've been saving up for this course... I only managed to mix one song out of 200 right, or so to speak. When with others in proper studio setups, I did learn, but never MADE the decisions. I'd really love to bring out serious and GOOD mixes. Gracias for las muchachas... |

That was very informative - thank you for your insight.
Anyone else, that can actually read between the lines, be graceful enough to give a valuable opinion. If I am not mistaken, this is the newbie section, where people with more knowledge help out people with less. I am no newbie, but would appreciate the experience factor. If I had posted on another section, I would definitely not have included option 3 as to avoid such a typical response, from such typical people. |

Ummm well the Fireface has only 4 mic pre's whereas the MOTU has 8...
Althought the fireface is better, I would go with the motu and better monitors. I wouldn't suspect to hear an outstanding difference between the two units, the price difference is a plus for the MOTU, and your monitors are one of the most important parts of your chain. My opinion.... Less card, more monitor.

From what I have read, the FF800 is a substancial notch over the MOTU. Better pre's, definitely better converters. I have a DMP3 I forgot to mention, Studio Projects B1 and an AKG D45, fender deville 410, very nice Fender custom 72 with lace sensor red and a bunch load of vintage and classic "indie" pedals, alesis nanocompressor, DX7 keyboard, yamaha cs10.
But, are you saying that I wont be able to produce a substancially better result with the fireface over the motu? Wont a better warmth of sound translate more over lesser monitors rather than a "colder" sound but better jugdment eq'ing it? Damn, I am puzzled. This is SO subjective it kills me. |

Are you wanting to work exclusivly with Protools or am I totally missing something between the lines as well. If you're wanting to continue in Protools, perhaps you should check out a Digi 002 or upgrade to a FW1814 and get some high end pre's. Tracking a whole band and the "yada yada yada" is going to be somewhat difficult with a FW410 even if you do add the MOTU or RME.
Again, maybe I am misunderstanding your post though. 6 |

I have seen people around protools on several ocasions, never used it. Nuendo has no secrets to me though. I HAVE to use protools as part of the curriculae in this course (and logic, cubase etc) Other than that, it's me in my bedroom recording tracks. Further on, the card (probably motu..arg!! dunno dunoo...) will be used as part of the live act to feed monitoring to drummer and some outs to the FOH (loops, synths). When I said "...recrd my band yadda yadda yadda..." - it's just us three, drummer, guitar and bass + loads of brilliant ideas Do not plan in the near future to record a full band. What I do want if train my ears the best I can. Oh, and ssscientist... I do not mean to pick a fight, it's just that I get the impression you're not very patient with noobs. Maybe I got it wrong, on my other thread I also felt you were also a bit patronizing. But, again, don't know you, I am the new one around here, so sorry if I too was a bit harsh... |

I don't know... I have lost a LOT of faith in m-audio. Sh*t drivers, cannot hotplug (stupid), dont know the specs or opinions on this unit (pre and converter quality)... also, it's way too big. Portability sure is an isue.
Do you have any experience with this unit? Danka-wanka ! |

Did it occur to you that I just don't like you? Arrogance, name dropping and talking above your head are three qualities that I really can't stand, and you possess all three in spades. Reread your first post in this thread and see if you can honestly tell me that you have no pride in your limited knowledge suggest no wish to throw your weight around in the future. I know a bully in the making --- and you are a bully hiding behind the newbie label. .

Well ssscientist, the thing with forums is that, although there are emoticons to play with, you cannot read intonation or facial expressions.
It is brilliant that you can dislike someone on their second post. Brilliant. I congratualate you. It shows how good a caracter judge you are. I did tell you off, but right after I said I was sorry, because after posting I realised that I could be getting it wrong. Now I see I wasn't. It is YOU that is attacking ME, I just freely said "hi...this is me with my needs... anyone care to comment" Did I over write? Maybe, I am quite excited to be at this point of my life. Sorry if it tired your eye. But then again, WHY did you in the first place? If you didn't care to comment, why did you, especially in THIS section of the forum? If you like this section of the forum, way make it unproductive with your first response? I am not talking over my head Although I am posting here does not mean I am a noob. I am actually a very modest person. I am scared shitless with the amount of money I will be dropping in January, extremely insecure. I have been saving up money for the last THREE years for this, who are you to say anything about me? I live in a small country with a shitty economy, you have NO idea what I went through to be able to be writing what I did. You have NO idea who I am or how I am, what I know or dont know. I LOVE to know what I dont know. And I have pride in the lack of knowledge I posses. It means I have soooo much to learn and I urge to know my limitations. It is you that is showing arrogance by throwing YOUR weight around. You insulted me. I didn't. In my second post I dismissed your opinion, thats all. You made conclusions about me in 3 seconds, whilst others, obviously over 18, just plain and simply.... answered, suggested, asked, informed... basically were productive. And didnt spend their energy making uninformed opinions about others. I can see that you spend WAY too much time in front of the screen. 3,443 posts. Just think that while you were fidling around with your pimples, I was actually in a studio recording a couple albums and EPs, playing some major local festivals, the odd videoclip, countless bars and pubs and even some international gigs. Yep, that I am proud of that. Oh... I get it. You REALLY think people will respect you in this virtual world by the size of your rep bar... how sad...What have you done with your life up to now? |

Except you. And that drives you stone cold crazy. I was willing to take your Firewire questions seriously - sort of. But the gear you are talking about in this post is nothing anyone can choose for you or even make a valid recommendation about except to tell you what has worked for them. When you get up to that level it's time to make your own decisions, and deep down you know that. Don't give me that 'bad economy' bullshit. We're just waiting to get our pants pulled down and get the big shaft of Herr Bush stuck up our asses once again. I'm NOT looking forward to having to take to the streets to dislodge him. Here are some smileys: .

I hope you get a thicker skin and can learn not to come off as conceited and cocky. That kind of holier-than-thou attitude isn't welcome here. Neither is self righteous bantering.

I would say that with the gear you currently have, you would be better served by getting a good set of monitors and treating your tracking/mixing space. It's not going to matter if you have a wall full of high end converters if you can't trust what you are hearing. The last time I had a bunch of cash to upgrade, I went through the same thing. I ended up spending a couple grand on rigid fiberglass. Best decision I've made. |

About the "argument" - this will be my final say. What really got to me was him saying I was a bully in disguise (?!?!) and throwing my weight around (I just came back from the scale, 62,5 kg... what on earth could I do with so little?) - saying he didnt like me, all of this based on 3 or 4 posts, that I re-read, and quite honestly, I see no harm in being super excited and sharing my dreams and worries.
Again, if it bothers some, it might not others, so just click the "close window" thingy... ! If that is not welcome, please say so politely and I will find somewhere else to dwell upon my doubts, and share my knowledge, that I know is very welcome (if I'd ever have a chance to show it here) - no harm done! Ok, I do recognize I could have been more straight forward and not have blabbed so much... but again, being this a forum (by definition it implies verborrea), people talk to each other, create relations, GIVE a little of themselves to recieve from others. And for the "newbie" section, I think much was exceded. And I did say I meant no fight and apologised (for nothing really that I should apologise for, but hey, I just like to get along without fusses). From there on it was just plain and simple insults. So yeah, I reacted BACK at the the same level of understanding of the other side. The fact that I have an m-audio and hi-fi speakers does not mean I am a noob, and idiot, less capable of being useful to this forum. It just means I invested all my gold in my primary necessity, being a professional guitarrist is also quite expensive. I do not wish to perpetuate this argument. I hope the parties involved understand that the conclusions made about myself are just plain wrong. I am a cool person to get along with, I like to mock around, I love serious discussions, I REALLY love the interchange. I just dont go for intolerance. It's primitive. There are way many more efective, apparantly distasteful, yet ending gracefully, ways to razz someone. But, once more, I am the new one here, so it is up to me to get to know the people who share this forum. Thank you all, will be going for dynaudio and motu, later maybe BLA. |

My God yidakee! I think you need to settle down man.
If you wanna see who started the fight go back and read your very first response to ssscientist. He was kidding around and making joke and you slapped him in the face! He Said: "I suggest a holiday in Tora Bora..." Which was a joke in relpy to choice "3 - Great holiday @ Bora Bora ... (or your own suggestion)" You said: "That was very informative - thank you for your insight. Anyone else, that can actually read between the lines, be graceful enough to give a valuable opinion. If I am not mistaken, this is the newbie section, where people with more knowledge help out people with less. I am no newbie, but would appreciate the experience factor. Sounds like you came here looking for a fight when he was just being silly. If you cant be open to a joke or silly response ebery now and again then you should expect him to defend him self yidakee!!! My God, learn some manners before you come in slinging mud! I'll go to bat for ssscientist anyday considering how much insite he has to offer. I couldnt say the same for you. -Blaze
