Mixing Down Peaking (MR8 mkII)

Hey, I was just wondering, when mixing down I can bounce all 8 tracks to a new song, that all works fine, but is there anyn way that I can see if the sound if peaking?

I would like to turn up some of the tracks but don't know how far I can go when mixingdiwn.

I know there is an idicator directly on the A and B inputs, but at no other stage...?

mmm, funnily enough I did theink to read through my users manual... rather than blow my nice new multitracker up befotre I got a chance to use it... but I couldn't find anything about this, only that I can use the limiter on an external recorder for mixdowns...

...

i didn't know you could mix all 8 down to a new song. at least, I don't think you can do that with the red mr-8 (I'll have to read my manual too).

but..........why not just do a few trial-and-errors, and see where the "new song" is peaking. a few attempts would probably get you where you want to be. me, I don't worry about it in the mr-8, since I end up recording all 8 into cubase or cool edit, and then mastering it (which includes bumping up the level, compression, EQ, limiting, etc.).

I can't do that at the moment. With the MR8-mkII I can mix down to a WAV file then use that in other software but can't mix down directly to that other software...

Where you say trial and error it to see where it is peaking, that's the issue, I can't see where it's peaking and I'm asking how I see that...

How about this. Plug it into your computer through the USB, pull the tracks over, take them into Kristal or whatever, and check them out there. Or do what I'm doing and sell your MR-8 and get an interface.

mixdown to the new song then play the new song and see what the levels are looking like on the 2 new tracks. if they're too hot, do another version that's lower. am i missing something here?

if you're wanting to see a nice little red light going off to say "hello, i'm peaking", no you wont' see that, that is only for when you're running something into the unit to record. you'll have to listen for digital distortion/crackles and just watch the meters on the "new song" to make sure they stay below whatever the manual says to stay below.

Thank you! That's all I wanted to know! I am so use to using my PC software which tells me that stuff automatically I thought the mr8 might have a similar feature. Thanks

Look on your LED screen. There are digital meters there for each track you have armed and/or recorded to.

The meter on the MR-8 goes from -48dB to 0dB. When you are tracking, you want to be close to 0dB. Any higher and you get digital clipping. Lower won't hurt you. In fact, there are a lot of people who track to -6dB or lower.
