Plugging instruments into the firebox

I'm really new to the recording scene and I'm trying to figure out how you configure a instrument into the mic input like it shows in this diagram for the firebox..

This is the Diagram.

I see that the rythm guitar is a mic'd thus using a mic cable box but the rest just show straight plug into the firebox... So confused
