My next buy?

So my set up is:

Presonus Firepod interface
G4 ibook
Shure 57
Headphones

I took a loan a few months ago, still being in high school, i've almost got it paid off with my part time job

Now for recordings i've used school equipment, using two Rode condenser mics, and some sorta kick drum mic.

Anyways im not sure what to go after now. I'm thinking a decent pair of monitors, i've got about 500 bucks, or just more rack gear. I'm not sure, what do you guys think?

I would say monitors and another mic.

If you have $500, you could get a decent pair of monitors (Behringer Truth's?) and a decent condenser mic.

Of course what monitors/mics you decide to get are up to you, those are just suggestions.

What do you plan on recording?

First glance, I'd say another mic.

And a lava lamp.

I do a lot of different music, from heavy metal, blues, rock, jazz, i do a lot.

I was thinking of getting a Shure SM58 mic, off of ebay of course. I've borrowed one from my local music store for a weekend and I loved the vocals from it.

But I guess ill go in to the store and try out some different types of monitors, anyone have a suggestion?

I have a pair of Behringer Truths. They have some (non-debilitating) technical quirks but they're plenty loud and I have no complaints about the sound quality.

get some monitors.

The SM58 is a good choice, but it is really basic and not that far from the 57, I would suggest something affordable that you will be able to stretch with. Maybe a SP B3, witha few different patterns to play with and it can do a decent job on vocals and acoustic. For screaming, i would think the 57 would do well enough to jsutify not buying a 58 to just make up the difference.

OR....
get a used Shure SM7 or EV RE20/27. The RE20 can be had from about $250 up (i got my RE27 a bit cheaper actually, but i have never seen a better deal since) the SM7 is about $300 and up used. I haven't used the SM7, but everyone pretty much loves it on vocals, amps, or a bunch of other things. I use my RE27 on kick, amps, vox, you name it, GREAT all around mic. Both mics will hold at least most of their value so you can pass them on later if you choose.

Monitors and one of those mics might be more than $500, but you seem to have made some good choices for gear to get into recording, might as well continue to be disciplined and buy stuff that will be good quality, retain value and provide some flexibilty in use.

Monitors definately, I also just got the 2031A Truth's and am glad I did. Just as an FYI... I got a Samson Resolv package for sale here on the free adds LOL.

I would also recommend a decent mic for vocals. Maybe a Studio Projects or even MXL V67G? I use both of these with good success.

Thanks for the knowledge guys, ill look into each mic and maybe even try some.

I looked up a few on ebay, and well I might have to put up my cash flow, but like you said, keep going with the good gear and affordable at the same time. I'm only young and well, i guess ill go into debt again

For the monitors, well on ebay, their isn't to much in Canada. And well i'm afraid of buying from the US, due to the fees, I was told that it would cost me a lot, to ship. So I might just buy the monitoirs from my local store first, and then hit up a ebay mic. Anyways none of the less thanks a lot for the help guys.
