a 'lil bass help

Howdy. I am putting a bass through my Behringer Vamp Pro and to my interface (M-audio fastrack). They sound is muddy and low. I realize this isn't the best method of recording bass, but as far as I can read everyone suggests either miking a bass cab (which I do not have at the moment), or using a DI box, which I also do not have. Until I get these things, this is what I'm stuck with, but I can't seem to get a good sound.

I need to be pointed in the right direction...

Isn't the Vamp a guitar thing?

it's gonna be very hard to get a good bass sound with the V-amp...it wasn't made for it. your best bet is to just get a cheap DI...you can find them just about anywhere for very little money...come on take some beer money and go invest in some gear.

I tried using the Bassman amp sim on my V-Amp and it sounded fairly "eh". I go into my Firepod via an ART Tube MP (yeah, I know, I bought the hype), and I use the two Helian bass amp sims to boost the sound. For my purposes, I think they sound fairly decent for freeware :-) Seriously, the 1st gives a nice sound that can get a bit lost if you don't EQ, and the 2nd gives a nice 2001 Rickenbacker bass sound if you're looking for that bit of a growl.

You can get what I consider to be some pretty good bass sounds with the V-AMP. Definitely as good or better than a cheap D.I.

I can send you a patch if you have your V-AMP hooked up via midi, so you can upload it.

Wow. Impressive amra. I especially liked Flesh Wound. NIIce bass sounds coming from that one. I don't have the Vamp hooked up to MIDI. any other way to get the patch?

Crank up the mids and compress it, alot.

Without MIDI, I don't know of any other way to get the patch on there, other than entering it in with the knobs. You will have to set everything manually, instructions for changing settings you don't normally change (drive for example) are in the manual. Put it in a slot you never use and overwrite the existing setting. Some of the upper slots on the V-AMP 2 pro are pretty useless presets. Anyway, here is a screenshot that you can use to see get the settings:

Always remember to use the tone knobs of your bass to get the sound you want also. I always start with all tone and volume knobs up full, get a sound from the amp (or virtual amp in your case) then fine tweak the V-amp and tone knob controls after doing test recordings until you are happy.
Mud usually comes from the mid range of an amp for bass. Try cutting the mid a bit
