Don't forget you need a sound card that is compatable with Cakewalk! You find out at http://www.cakewalk.com

You can use a mixer also. Synth > mixer > midi interface > sound card > PC.

Or just Synth > midi interface > sound card > PC.

Oh, we all were newbies at one point brother. dont stress it.
Midi interface: noun. a device which links your cpu to your synth You can use this and configure your software program to recognize the midi signals sent into your comp.they come as small as one in one out....(meaning one instument can be hooked up to it) or eight in eight out and many other configurations.they can also be cascaded (linked to each other) to hold more instuments

hey! one more thing, the synth i'm planning on getting has GM/GS compatability....which means it can hook to the cpu, thats what it says in the right up on it. So i would use those ports right?
thanks again

oh dont stress that gm/gs/xg thing tohard...all it is is that certain companies(like yamaha for example)have certain midi codes that are slightly different from the normal one(gm or general midi)....it has some advantages but not much... but it is good to get a synth that is compatible with both. and dont worry im jst doin what the other guys in here did for me
