I am getting sustained stutter when playing back and when recording. (Cakewalk Exp. 8.0) Sometimes, the stutter is so bad that it actualy stops the playback/recording, as if I had clicked the stop button.

Pentium II,400Mhz, 128 Ram, Soundblaster AWE 64 with 8 meg Ram, Win 98.

Any suggestions?

Go to your system.ini file.
look under [vcache] what is yours set to?
try putting this in.
MinFileCache=0
MaxFileCache=8192

also, what are your virtual memory settings at?

I found the sub-heading vcache but there is nothing written immediately underneath it. Is that where you suggest I should put in the two lines of memory size? Will those settings be saved? What is it I am actually doing by inputting those values?

Cakewalk tech support reccomended I go to Compact audio data. This helps clean up the memory location where the song is held. It also suggests raising the buffers to 8. I raised only the playback from 2 to 4 and this seems to have resolved the problem.

ok, the vcache tells your computer just howmuch memory it should use when accessing your hardrive. Inputting those numbers may give you some extra performance. It has worked for me. I raised my buffers to 10, and my computer has been singing ever since. Try the vcache settings, if you notice any drawbacks (you probably wont) then keep it there. I just find that it works really well for me.

Tech support also suggested I visit http://www.winmag.com and run a diagnostic called WinTune to see how my uncached memory is performing. They suggest a transfer speed of 6MB/s for twenty audio tracks and a minimum of 3.0MB/s for ten tracks. My HD is running at 4.3MB/s.

Anyhow, the buffering increases seem to work okay for now but I'll also try your suggestion.

No problem, do you know how fast in milliseconds your mixing latency is in Cakewalk?

just wondering,,,if you have CAKE 9 and you have faster that 100 msec you can take advantage of Wavepipe Acceleration.

Isn't the typical suggestion to make both the min and max file cache the same ammount?

No, that's the swap file size you're thinking of, which Windows calls virtual memory.

Unfortunately, I only have CWE8.0 at present so I don't think I have the level of system info that you get in CW 9. But maybe I'll upgrade soon, I'm very happy with the results so far and now want to record multi tracks of audio, not just two.
