Someone was just telling me about this today in fact.

Not sure if they're still actually being made though.

There's an older simpler program called GVox that has a midi pickup & box into your PC BUT it only runs on W95.

Try this for fun!
http://www.harmony-central.com/Softw...tar-synth.html
It's a software version of a guitar synth. No hardware(other than your guitar and soundcard)required.Far from perfect(perhaps far from functional! ) but really intriguing in its possibilities.
Unfortunately,I believe the developer died. This is from a few years ago,and I haven't been able to find something similar. It seems to me that the need for the midi pickup, converter and sound module could be eliminated!

Yeah,I want one....bad!I think it was just a Roland or Yamaha guitar synth.
I wont be getting one anytime soon!
The only other time I've ever seen someone use one was in the early 90's,and the latency was nearly comical.Notfont's setup seemed completely w/o that(from what I could tell).
I could do some crazy shit with that!

I wish I had 250 or a mixer!I's just a po' boy!
I have a 12 channel Fostex utility mixer with 1/4" inputs. It's all the size of a computer keyboard.
Nice and lightweight!

This is what I use:

http://www.open-tuning.com/img/Yamaha-G10G10C.html

It's a pretty sophisticated device with 4 pickups per string and the latency very good in fact. The big thing with using this is how the synth is set up. The G10 is designed to be used with a 6 part multimberal synth with each part running in mono mode. This is case because the G10 controller sends a TON of midi data for each string (note, pitchbend, sustain and some others) and it needs 6 midi channels to work properly.

It's kinda weird though since it uses 6 of the same strings, which are all tuned to the same thing

This generally requires a MIDI pickup for guitar, a hardware unit to receive the pickup data, and perhaps a synth for sounds.

Most are available on EBay. Roland makes the GK3 pickup for about $200. You can find Roland GR50 units on EBay for usually less than $200. There are lots of synth units.

Roland also makes floor models that include the interface, floor control buttons, and synth sounds.

This is the gear I use:
