Pros vs. Cons on Gibson SG supremes??
ANyone have any opinions, or anything I should be aware of before purchasing one of these?
It says it has the '57 humbucker. Is that a good thing?? what kind of tone will I get through a very nice all tube amp? I like that these have 24 frets, and are lightweight and seem to have a very resonant body. Im thinking of getting a trans black color. here is the link. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...ers?sku=517217 thanks in advance. |

Looks rock solid to me. I would go play one first. It looks killer.

the 57 is a super sweet pickup.
The guitar has a maple top so it's much brighter than the other sg's. it is a nice looking guitar. I would play some before you buy it though.

SGs tend to have a bit of a weakness at the headstock joint. If you're hard on guitars, they get knocked around a lot, maybe not the best guitar for you. My neighbor's son knocked the case over while the guitar was in it (on the side to flat down), and the headstock snapped off.

If you've got heavy fretting hands though its not the headstock joint you should be worried about, SGs already have a weak neck joint, and the supremes and 61 RIs have the neck joint at a higher fret. So if you tend to pull or push on the neck the pitch of whatever you're playing will change. I've played a few 61 RIs and thought the neck was a little weak, I haven't played a Supreme but it should be just the same. Try a few out and while you're there pick up a nice Standard to compare the necks. IMO the Supremes look awesome, but I'd be afraid of making an SG brighter by adding a maple top, they're already bright, and I wouldn't be able to get used to the neck joint. (I have an SG Standard with upgraded pickups)

so if the maple top will make an already bright guitar brighter, does the '57 pickup factor in to the sound by balancing it somehow? I dont mind bright as long as there is bottom end too.
I just joined a band where ill be doing anything from the beatles to green day, billy joel to poison. So what i need is some nice solid tone, that can be changed by rolling the volume knob back a little or a pick up swithch here or there to change up the tone. Looks like my metal days are over for now. nice change. thanks to all that replied, feedback left for all. I appreciate it. |

I have a trans blue one. I was so impressed with it, I had Gibson make me a 12 string version (24 fret). My blue one is pictured with it. Here is the link
http://home.comcast.net/~bonrox/guitars/roxy.htm I have had them for a few years now and have had no problems with them. Of course, I havn't slamed the cases around to see what happened either...lol They are a wider fretboard with a thinner neck. So you have to play it to get used to it. The real problem, I find, is going between an SG and a Strat. I tend to miss a note here and there for the first minute or two, until I get used to it. |

I think about $1,500. The trans blue is named Merlin. Here is more of my collection.

who says that cheap gear sounds good? in my store, i've played all of the guitars and amps. cheap sounds like cheap. RARELY does it ever sound close to a decent setup..

I'm not comparing cheap to decent, I'm comparing analog to digital. Read what I posted before you reply next time.
