When a problem arises, try to break it down into small steps. First to check your cake out... load a wav file, there are plenty of free ones around... does cake play it so you hear it. Next make sure the keyboard is playing. If you are not playing through cake, is audio coming out of the audio out jacks. Next, is the cake sending and the keyboard receiving midi data. Load a prerecorded midi sequence (should be some on the cake cd) and see if it plays the keyboard. If you have a second module or something, test to make sure the keyboard is sending midi data. If all of that is happening, next check to see if the keayboard and cake are set up correctly... cake is recoridng in midi omni mode or set to the channel the keyboard is sending. Make sure the track is armed... the red R is highlighted next to the track. When you record... are midi notes appearing on the track. etc. Hope that helps... if the problem isn't fixed, send another post!!

I can load up a sequence and play it and everything will be fine..I can hear sounds from the keyboard so I know its not the MIDI connection..also the notes and everything work when Im in the piano roll...they just dont work when I hit the actualy keys on the keyboard..

When you say you hear the pre recorded sequence... (just checking) that is the keyboard making the sound and not a soundfont? right?

Also, when you play the keyboard... do you hear sounds (but just can't record midi data)?

(Just checking those)

If it is neither of those, it sounds like a mismatch between what midi channel the keyboard is sending and what Cakewalk is recording.... (also... sorry if this is stupid, you do have the record button on and hit record and not just play? right?) To make sure that it is not a midi mismatch, go to track properties in track one and set the source to midi omni, then make sure the port and midi channel (on the same track) are set correctly for your keyboard (e.g., if you are using some sort of multi, there is a channel set to receive what cakewalk is sending)

As an example, I am using a multi on the Alesis QS8 with piano on channel 1, bass on channel 2, strings on 3 etc. I have the keyboard set to output midi data on channel 1. I set up track 1 in Cakewalk to record either in midi omni or midi 1 mode. I go to port and make sure that is where the QS is located (you may not have a lot of port choices unless you have more than one midi output port) and the output channel is #1. I arm the track by turning record on and start cakewalk recording. Now I play, it should record data (and I should hear the piano play) and it will play back when I stop. Let us know how that works.

ok here it goes

1)check your midi connections midi in / midi out (cables ok?)
2) open options windows to see if your midi instrument is included

3)arm the track that you want to record your sound on (make sure volume , bank, channel, port and source have the right selections

4) hit the r button on your keyboard and play anything

5)let us know what happens and we'll take it from there
