Plugins 101

Could someone explain how you use the downloads? I am very, very new to this (obviously) and was wondering where I was supposed to download the files to. I have a copy of Tracktion on the way, but thought I would get a jump on some things.

Do I download them onto my hard drive and then import them into the recording program I am using? Are plugins easy to use with Tracktion?

I did a search, but found nothing that explained these simple questions.

thanks

I've never used Traktion so it's hard to say exactly. Basically it depends on which kind of plugin it is...DirectX, VST, VSTi (instrument), etc. Generally, VST plugins should go into one folder on your computer:

C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VSTPlugins\

put the .dll files in there. Then open Tracktion and see if it finds the new plugins. If it doesn't you may need to refresh the plugins list or add the \Steinberg\VSTPlugins folder to your VST plugins folder somewhere in the preferences.
