Monitors on tripods?....any differences to being on my desk?

Hi everyone!!
I imagine this question will drift somewhere between getting some subjective and objective feedback.......I really don't mind responses coming from either.
Now, due to space restraints, I can't move my mons more than 2 feet away from eachother and still keep 'ear height'; (and the 'triangle' we aim for).
If I was to whack them onto some tripods, I could place them either side of my desk and achieve around 6 feet seperation.....please, let's not get bogged down on seperation or stereo fields.....but your responses on potential frequency changes or other sounds, and how they might change when on tripods would be of great help. Maybe it's better?
At the moment, my mons are against a wall (about 3 inches) and are parallel against that wall (yeah, I get good bass, but that is not the right way for monitors!!)....just so you know I know!!.
I will still be trying to attain the 'triangle' concept of monitor setup!! (try to!)
Just want to know how they'd sound comparitively speaking, from your experiences!!

Do it! 2 feet? You need a neck brace to stay in the sweet spot. And up on stands is always better than on a flat surface that extends in front of the monitors.

Care to elaborate on that? I never understood the principle of having them on stands...

I've seen two main concepts on the stands,

one was the reflection off the mixing console causing issues, (its the out of time soundwaves hitting your ears and messing things up, like in perfect Ideal theory you would only hear the sound from the speaker at that instance, but what you actually are hearing is all this crap bouncing off table tops and walls and cancelling and adding the frequenecys.....so many electrons and nuetrons...

you can tell how good your setup is by the amount of ear wax you build up.


and the other was a speaker design mention to keep the "bass in the box", so by isolating the monitors from making contact to anything, is the goal here. (via, foam, spikes, or 100% air floating speakers is Theoretical Ideal...)
That article said your actually losing or self defeating the design of the cabinet by having it vibrating the table and then the little electrons start zipping all over the freaking place and baning into Ions knocking them loose and somehow the bass gets less "tight"...

thanks to the designers and physicists for doing their homework and math, so all we have to do is buy foam or little spikes and stands.

I've tried both ways, the stands are good but the ergonomics of a small room is a hard trade off if you can't really hear a difference.

What CoolCat said. With a horizontal reflective surface extending out in front of the monitors you get comb filtering.
