random LDC thread

herro! i am looking for another flavor in LDC. my main concern is for vocals. mine.

i hvae a GT55 that i like on a lot of people's vocals that i record...but i'm not thrilled with mine...

here's an old recording of my voice that was done with like a AT 3035 to give you a little taste of the characteristics...

http://dontrunmusic.com/mp3/dont_run_goodbye_note.mp3

i know i should be doing listening tests...but short of trying out 500 microphones...let's narrow down the selection a bit first....

figure a $500USish price range...

If more tenory/altoey try the sE SE2200A($299).

you need some mid boost instead of the scooped out mids of a gt55 go try a baby bottle

Of one's I've actually used, I'd also consider the BLUE Bluebird & Blueberry (got mine for $600 used (shipped)-- both fine cardioid condensers. I have a couple of fine Karma mics that are great for vocals too-- the multipattern tube K-58 ($395 direct) and the K-6 phantom powered ribbon ($360 direct). I also, believe it or not, got good vocal tracks out of a Rode NT-1000 for several years until I was able to upgrade.

did you take a listen to the tracks???

trying to keep myself out of jail from beating the clerk at a local music shop, i'd like some real educated guesses for what people who have a nice selection of mics would reach for if I were going to be singing in their studio, as i am incapable of getting a nice selection at this point...

and i'd rather try 6 mics than 200

No I didn't at first-- my bad. I did now though-- great song and vocals man-- you're a really good singer. The thing that stuck out to me about it was that it was a little sibilant and I don't know if that's the mic or the preamp. For my small assortment of mics (all of the ones I listed but the Bluebird, which I sold), I'd probably reach for the K-58. Have you ever tried a dynamic on your voice? The usual suspects (RE-20, SM7b, etc.) might work well.

ORKSNORK, You have a great voice, but beware of the screaming too much, otherwise your will have a short singing career.

You will do well with any mic, just use a pop filter and stay 18" away. SM7 would be great, Studio Projects T3 if you are thinkin' tube, even NTK. CAD would be nice too, as high up as you can get past the vsm. A ribbon would reign supreme, all I have used on a consistant basis is my m500 and a nadyesque coles chin ese knockoff. A Beyer m160 or 260 or 500 would rock as would an AEA.

I listened to your vox and if I were recording you the three mics I'd try would be as follows; SM7, Karma K58, and a SE H3500 which is no longer made. Hope that helps you in your thought process.

Have you checked around to see if there is a local studio with a decent selection of mics to try out? If so book an hour or two and get your vox burned to a CD. Then take the CD home and run it through your monitors to get a better feel for what mic "does" fit your vox best. Good luck.

If it's flavor you're looking for, have you considered a ribbon?
