Kick Drum Mic
Which would you choose?
Shure Beta 52 or AKG D 112 |

D-112 has more midrange and a more traditional sound. It likes to be placed inside the kick, a couple inches from the batter head.
Beta 52 has a more scooped sound and likes to be placed just inside the hole in the fromt head.

If those were my only choices, probably the AKG.
I used to use a Beyer TG-X50, but I recently got an EV RE20 and it smokes on my kick.

I haven't heard the shure but I know I can't stand the sound of the D112 on kick for studio recording anyway.
Matter of fact I may stick a 57 in there before I put a d112. A couple of days ago we were experimenting with mics on a kick. D112 was one of them hence my opinion. But we stuck all kinds of wierd mics in there toward the end though. One mic surprised us though. The Beyer M201. It may be worth checking out. Out of the traditional kick mics we listened to... The audix d6 wasn't bad. The RE-20 smoked. And the kick mic made by Sennheiser E602 I believe sounded good. Sennheiser 421 had an even sound and took EQ really well. YMMV Will

I like D-112's. I had a guy come in here and he had the Audix mics. I fooled around with them for about an hour and now I hate them. I've never had my hands on the 52. If you can't get a decent sound witha 112, it's not the mic, it's the drum.

There's a couple of dozen mics commonly being used on kicks, and others that some people swear by that are not usually thought of as kick mics.
Everyone has their own idea of what a kick hould sound like, plus they are all mic'ing different drums in different rooms. One person will tell you Mic A is the only mic they would ever use, and another would tell you they wouldn't use Mic A if there was a gun to their head. There's no way around trying a few out for yourself and seeing what works for you. |

I like the D112. I also like the EV RE-20.

D112. I also love the Shure SM7 for bass drums, or even the AKG C414 sometimes.
I can't get the punch I want out of the RE20, it just sounds clicky and naff IMO |

For rock/pop the modern choice is the beta 52.

My thought is that if you use the search function you'll find some info.
