shielding

i ws wondering, since I'm moving in with my brother when i go to collage, he's changing a room for me purely for recording, so I was wondering since i wan't to run cables from the front to the back of the room, which shouldn't be a problem except that there's also AC cables running thrue the wall, so my question is how far should the audio cables be from the power cables to not be affected by the hum, and if I do have to cross cables, how should i shield the cables to prevent noise from the AC? thxs

as long as your cables are already shielded, balanced and grounded properly, you shouldn't run into any problems.
There will always be AC in the walls of a room.

Thats the thing, they're curently not shielded,

an additional note i was wondering if "bass catchers" have to be flat or if the can curve to the contours of the wall (which would look better)

how do you have cables that are not shielded? Usually only speaker wire comes without a shield...any XLR, 1/4" or RCAs should all have a shield.

I make my own cables, (cheeper) but i suppose it would be better if i bought the cables then? (which would make it easeyer on my part)

well, if you're making them correctly, your ground wire is your shield on a standard two conductor mic cable (red and white=hot and cold...silver shield with no plastic coating=ground).

if you're using quad cable...the shield is still wrapped or braided around the conductors.
