Rode NT-2A vs. AKG3000B
Based on a friends recommendation, I am considering replacing my AKG 3000B with a Rode NT-2A for recording male vocals. I use a Studio Projects VTB-1 mic pre-amp.
Can someone suggest what difference/s, either positive or negative, am I likely to experience? |

What do you use the mic for?

Recoding male vocals? I think the Rhodes will have a bumpier higher midrange.Don't underestimate the AKG which I am told has a smoother topmid.

I don't know of a worse male vocal mic out there than the AKG 3000, no wait, the c1000s is worse. The Rode would be an improvement but there are many good mics at that price point.
At $350( some less): ADK Hamburg or Vienna, AT 4040, AT 4033 (one of my favs tho its actually a mid sized diaphragm), CAD M179, Heil Pro 40 (dynamic), Marshall 69, Shure KSM27, Studio Projects C3 (T3 is much better but $100 more), Or even a studio favorite .... Shure SM7

I have to laugh at how many times I either see Rode's dissed or understated. Frankly IMHO from what I've used over the last 25 years in studios the NT2-A is every bit the mic a AKG 414B-ULS or Neumann TLM 103 ever was if not superior is some ways. Those others are 2 I've owned and used extensively. The Rode is actually even quieter (less self noise) than those as well. It is more flat than several of the other rode offerings and smokes lower line AKG's for that matter. I'm not altogether sure what the reasoning behind the anti Rode movement is. Perhaps those using them have crispy preamps, or just don't understand what an honest output would be if it bit them. Certainly if one prefers a lot of color in their output the Rode might not be the best candidate. For male vocals it is pretty much my "go to" mic. I have a K2 which I use for females in preference. Otherwise it is pretty much above reproach.

Thanks Roadwarrior this is much the same comment I got from my friend. I seem to detect like yourself that there is some feeling against the Rode for whatever reason. Anyway seems like it might be worth pursuing. Cheers for all the comments.

I didn't say it was bad at all, I like Rode, I have an NTK with a NOs black plate that I use quite often. I'm saying there are many mics to consider. The AKG on the other hand, ucka.

It would be very difficult to "underestimate" that mic. |
