yet another insulation question...

but this is about insulating properties for heating and cooling...not sound.

I want to add some extra insulation in my attic...say another R30 or so, ... on top of my measly (estimated) R19 that is already there. I am either thinking about just adding some more unfaced bats perpendicular to my ceiling joists (my current insulation comes to the top of them) OR blowing in some of this cellulose stuff. The only arguments I hear against the "blow in" stuff is that it settles. Otherwise it has some other advantages, not to mention MUCH cheaper and MUCH easier to do in my case.

So, should I pony up the extra $600 bucks or so for the fiberglass rolls to cover my 2000 sq ft. Not to mention having to lug up all these rolls of insulation up some attic steps and then struggle to roll them out (basically sounds like a miserable day) .... or just rent a machine and blow it in myself (or hire it out.. not much more actually)?

btw, my plans are to put a couple of rolls near my soffits, along the edge of the roof, so I don't blow the stuff in and cover my soffit vents...without having to install baffles and excessive crawling around....and maybe a roll down the center line should I need up there again for some odd reason to run more wiring.

definately go with the cellulose....
not only is fiberglass a toxic devil (feel itchy)
but cellulose has about twice the insulating properties.. and is way easier to install = spray gun/tube
id recommend the baffles (plastic/foam) in your eaves .. just so you dont have to deal with fiberglass.. youre going to have to get over there one way or another... just put them over your planned line of insulation and try not to fill them if you blow it yourself...
for a walk path build a plywood U to hold out the fiberglass.. but wide enough to crawl on...

the fun part will be for whoever remodels in 20-30 years
