Cake walk studio mix/ Boss BR-8

I am using a Boss BR-8 for recording and a Boss JS-5 for my sounds.
I have a Peavy Cakewalk Studio Mix that I would like to incorperate into use to maximize the usage of all equipment.

Can these units work together?

I can record in cake walk direct using my midi keyboard connected in to my comp[uter directly but not while using cakewlk.

I've tried to record audio from a tape player on to a track but just ended up with a dark colored space said says( record 1) and when I tried it again it says (record 2).

Any ideas?
