Recording Drums
Hi,
I currently have 4 mics that I can use to record drums with: - Shure SM57 - CAD KBM412 Neodymium Kick Drum Mic - Samson C01 Condenser Mic - Sennheiser e815S I was wondering how I should use them to record the kit? Any suggestions? Please help out if you can Cheers, Stan |

KBM41 on the Kick.
SM57 on the snare. (now here's the problem) C01/e815s as L/R overheads? Not ideal at all. C01 mono overhead? still not ideal either. I would save my pennies for an overhead set, probably $100 will get you a decent set. Or buy another C02. If buying another mic is absolutely not an option I would do the following. c01 / e815s as stereo overheads Maybe xy, but I'd pan them only 25-35%. |

Would having 2 of the same overheads have a HUGE difference? even if I only bought the c01 (because I'm on a budget and its the cheapest I can find)...

Like he said, the kick drum mic on kick, obviously, and the sm57 on the top of the snare. You want a stereo pair of overheads, make them the same
model. |

If I was micing a kit with minium setups, here's how I'd do it: 1 mic: Room Mic 2 mics: L/R Overheads 3 mics: L/R Overheads, Kick 4 mics: L/R Overheads, Kick, Snare. 1 well placed omni directional mic in a good room, with a good sounding kit is sometimes all you need ![]()

One mic can do the trick. I have used one mic for my porno movies before too, and it was all i needed. Then I ripped of the beatles for mixing and put all the live sounds in the left channel and overdubs in the right. IT was sweet.

or... you could pick up some of those msh-1a omni matched pairs for like $50 and use one of the other condensers as a room mic.

thanks for the replies...
I think I'll just look at getting another samson c01 mic... it seems to be the best/easiest option. Thanks |
