Recording drums in CEP?

I'm trying to record my drums through Cool Edit Pro 2.1 and I can't figure out how to get it to sound right. It's like it records the Left and Right tracks in mono. Is there any way to be able to pan the toms and cymbals?

I'm using a Peavey 10 channel mixing board and 7 Shure mics (SM57, PG56's, PG52, and PG81's).

I only have 1 input on my laptop and one "head phone" output. I have the mixing board Left and Right channels run into a "Y" so I can plug it into the single input. I know I have to find a way to plug the cables into 2 inputs, but I have no idea how.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

you will have to do all the panning in your mixing board. If you have everything panned to the center on the board, then it will all be recorded that way.

There's no way you can get Cool Edit to control panning when you're recording - you can only do that at the mixing stage. But if you use a stereo miking technique, you can record a stereo sound on the drums. You won't be able to control the amount of panning that stereo image has in the mix, but it's a simple way to get space on the drumkit sound.
