Overheads should be okay. I'm using CM90s myself. They aren't anything special or anything, but if you place them right, they give a good image of everything but the low tom and kick. Turn up the gain on the low tom as needed to compensate.
![]() Replace the kick mic with an AKG D112. Add a snare mic (and if you only have three toms, put the other tom mic in a drawer in case you ever need four)... something that's a little brighter than a tom mic would be. Maybe a Shure Unidyne III? You should be able to get a used one for about $30 on eBay. ![]()

for 600 i would get either a beta 52 or d112 for the kick, some es57's (the sm57 copies), then whatever overheads you want. I might try to find some studio projects overheads.

I was in the same situation, and this is what I ended up getting:
4 SM57's - $270 1 AKG D112 - $180 2 JM27's - $100 Total Cost of $550. I actually got the AKG used for only $100, so I lucked out and get everything for under $500.

I am also i nthe same boat. I plan on getting SM57 for snare, keeping the tom mics, the best mxl mics thati cna afford for overheads or studio projects, and then the akg d112 for bass.
