Sun Studio

Hey guys, I'm going to Memphis this weekend and plan on checking out Sun Studio while I'm there. I hear they modernized the place in the mid 80's, but surely they still have some cool analog stuff there. Anybody been there?

I've been to Graceland never been to Sun Studios, unfortunately. Was only there for a few hours. Never went inside Graceland, just outside the gate.
Like to go back there. Good burgers and frappe across the street from Graceland. If the place is still there. Have a good time.

I've been planning to go to Graceland + Sun Studios since '85 and still, for one reason or another, never made it.

I envy you!

When I was there visiting a friend in the ’94 (or was it ’95?) they had a huge Soundcraft console and a Soundcraft 2” 24-track – the only Soundcraft reel-to-reel I’ve ever seen. They had several analog decks – a Studer mastering deck and another 24-track, which I can’t remember the model right off hand. Those and a Hamond B3 stuck in my mind, but its full of odds and ends of every kind… a bit hard to take in. It’s not a huge place as “super studios” go.

It seems silly now but I didn’t even go to Graceland, as I was pressed for time and I thought I would probably be going back sooner than later. It’s only 8 hours away, but as it turned out I never did get back there.

Hmmm… how do I say this? I wasn’t a big Elvis fan. But that could be taken out of context if I didn’t add that I just didn’t follow bands or artists, so I wasn’t an anyone fan… but I liked his classic stuff of course.

I was a Bruce Lee fan and I had a Farrah Faucett poster on my wall for a while, but that’s about it (yeah, I know she can’t sing, but what the hell). Ok, enough about me, and Farrah… now back to Memphis… have fun.

We went to Sun Studios a couple years ago on our way back from New Orleans Jazzfest. I bought a great 8 cd boxset of classic Sun stuff, and a bunch of Sun guitar picks. I taped one pick on each of my tape decks in my studio for a little of the old SUN MOJO!!! And of course the sound improved
dramatically as soon as I did..................

Sun Studios was a blast. Had a lot of fun, wrote a marriage proposal to my girl on the wall at Graceland and buried my guitar pick in the lawn Rock N Roll!!

Well..... what was her answer?

Did you get a chance to look around much at Sun or were they recording? Do they still have the old analog multitracks?

Yeah, she said yes. But we've actually been together for a long time, I've just never officially popped the question.
Sun had a lot of cool stuff, but most of it was encased in glass upstairs. We got to go into the room where all the recording was done back in the 50's. I got the biggest kick out of that. Just standing there where Elvis, Johnny Cash and later even U2 had recorded was a great experience. There is a lot of rock n roll history in that room. The control room was not open to the public.
I had been to Graceland before, but it was years ago. My mother took me up there a couple of times when I was a kid. This was when Elvis was alive. And we went to the graveside in 1978.

Congrats on the acceptance AND visiting Sun.
If my girl was cool enough to check out a studio i'd marry her too.

-I hope she never sees this thread!-
