New here - Care to listen?

Hi folks,

I can't believe it took me this long to find a home recording forum that actually has some activity. Every place I've been to has about 5 members that visit the board once a week or so. This place is very active and I'm sure I'm going to learn quite a bit here.

I'm part of what I think is a pretty exciting project. There are four of us, all around around the globe, recording our parts, sending them back and forth until finally mixed down into a finished tune. Our members are located in Arizona, Finland, Scotland and Wisconsin. I know is bad protocol to come to a new board and on my first post ask for critiques, but I hoping to get some feedback and I continue to get to 'know the place' and offer some critiques of my own.

Two of our most recent tunes are here:

Envy
http://www.soundclick.com/util/strea...d=4000098&q=hi

Murder With A Smile
http://www.soundclick.com/util/strea...d=4078081&q=hi

About about 9 more are available at either link below in my sig.

Guitars are recorded direct to PC via POD XTLive and Boss GT-6. Envy guitars are mostly POD and MWAS guitars are entirely GT-6. Solos on Envy are GT-6.

All wavs come back to me and are mixed in Adobe Audition. We would certainly appreciate your thoughts on any and everything from playing, guitar tones, song structure, mix, recording etc.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to listen and comment!

I liked everything except that I had a hard time hearing the vocals...might just be me and my years of blowing my eardrums out with loud amps but, I feel that the vocals could be more up front....otherwise....good stuff..keep up the good work!!!!!

Hey Project,... Welkom,

Great recording here, I like the warmth and definition in the rhythm guitar. I think the guitar with the Wah Wah at the beginning could do with a boost in the mids to reduce a little muddiness.

I enjoyed the solo section, nice guitar playing!
The bass is very pristine.
The drums sound great, very punchy and tight. The snare could be boosted in the mids slightly to get a crack going but that's just my personal taste.

Nice work!!

Thanx for sharing with us!

Gorty..

Hi Steve, welcome!

First of all let me say nice job with the global collaboration! I would love to do something like that someday, if only I had the time.

The tunes sound really good, for the most part. It's not really my style of music anymore, but I did grow up listening to your obvious influences.

The drums seem a bit hot to me in the first track (Envy). To my ears they are mixed better in the other track. In Envy it sounded to me like the kick track was riding on top of the mix, which can't possibly be a good thing.

Vocals sound fine to me, but then so much of this listen/critique thing comes down to the PC/system one listens on. That also could explain why I had trouble hearing the bass most of the time.

Good tunes though. A really nice job considering the distance between you all.

Keep it up!

Chris

Hey there Steve,

Let me also extend a warm welcome! This forum is awesome (as you'll get to know) and there are many helpful people on here to collaborate with.

It also sounds like you have alot to contribute! Awesome songs, they sound great. I agree with the previous vocals comment; I also like them a little more prominent, but that's just personal preference. As it sounds right now, you have some excellent sounding mixes. Keep it up! I look forward to hearing more of your stuff :-]

I listen to Envy; sounds good. I love the drums! I like the mix on them, up front. There seemed some mud in the solo section, but it was cool, overall.

Thanks everyone for the responses so far. I know that vocals might be a back a bit in MWAS, especially during the verses. It's a low tone/power there on the vox and it's a bit hard to get them out front. I'll work on it some more. Some EQ will likely help.

Envy... Thanks for the solo compliment. That's my solo break on that song. I'll also take a look at it and see if I can get rid of some of the muddiness. If someone is having a hard time hearing the bass on Envy, it must be related to the "computer speakers". Cause that song is bass HEAVY! The bass is actually a 5 string and I wouldn't be surprised if it's not going below the frequency response of the speakers.

The drums on Envy are undergoing a make over. I'll be sure to post back when that is complete.

For those that asked for more, all of our songs can be heard here: http://www.soundclick.com/project43

Thanks again to everyone for taking the time to listen and reply. It is most certainly appreciated. And keep 'em coming!

I'm not sure which tune you're inquiring about, but in this case they are two different animals. Murder With A Smile features our drummer, Scott Wallace on his Roland TD-10 kit. On Envy, we used Drums on Demand drum loops, as Scott hadn't joined us at the time Envy was created. However, we're are currently working on replacing those loops with Scott's playing. Another few days and we should be close to having that update completed.

Scott plays his parts, exports this from his system into 24/44100 wavs and then they are mixed in with the rest in Adobe Audition.

The songs on our site that currently have Scott featured on them. Exit, All Thru The Night, Cruzin' and Murder With A Smile. Three more new tunes are in the last stages of mixing and will be listed on the site shortly.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions.

Scott has completed his drum track for Envy and I wanted to post an update. I think he did a great job of keeping the original feel while really expounding upon it and giving the song a powerful back beat.

Nice rockin' drums on this....he's done a very nice job on this.

Mix is pretty good too. Not much bass guitar coming through , however, I'm not a metal connoiseur so maybe that 's the norm...

Excellent song and equally impressive playing and singing by all involved....

Cool song.

Listened to the one with the updated drums. Nice singing style with the vocal tremolo.

Songs sound cool. Nice guitar playing.

1:55 - 2:30 the kick going crazy is not so much keeping in the tone of the genre. I'm not a guru on those by any stretch of the imagination but the guitars are not playing anything crazy fast and neither is the bass but the kick is going pretty fast. The recommendation is to lower the kick vol. during the interval or to maybe raise the guitar and bass volume.

Those screaming wahs are cool. The squeals are way cool.

I'm going to assume you were joking about the bass? This song is pretty bass dominate. At least in places. If not, maybe you were listening on PC speakers?

If you were joking, then yes.. the bass is kinda hot. But we think it fits this song like that. Maybe not.

Thanks! This is probably our most 'modern' sounding song. That's for sure. Everyone did indeed do a great job on this one.

Charlie came up with this song and riff. He plays the rhythm guitars on this track. He's got a great tone going on this one too.

Very valid point. I've actually pulled down the kick drums already. Sounds like they could go down a bit more. I will certainly investigate it.
