Any thoughts on GC MXL 990/991 deal

I would like to get a mic for recording my acoustic and have read that a condenser mic would be a good pick to do that. However, I just don't have much money to spend (maybe a $100) and saw the GC deal for the MXL 990/991 and the M-Audio Audio Buddy. Would this be a good deal for inexpensive, or would is there something else I should look at. I have two dynamic mics (cheap AKGs) and a Tascam 424mkii. Thanks.

It doesn't look like the Tascam supplies phantom power, which the condensor mikes need. This is not unsurmountable, though it will cost a little more money. I don't have time right now to point you at any, but I hope someone will come along shortly that can. I have seen plans to build your own at very little cost also. I'll check by tomorrow and if nobody has posted more information, I'll find some for you.

Jeff

i had issues with the 990 running thru an audio buddy. i never really found out before i sold the stuff but i'm betting it was an issue with the phantom power. it's kind of too bad too because the audio buddy sounds pretty decent for the money.

Ya know... for someone just getting started that's looking for a low cost condenser (two actually, in this deal) and their first stand-alone mic pre, I'd say go for it. It's only $100 (or $99 I think), and you'll learn a whole bunch about recording, condenser mics versus dynamic mics, and mic preamps while you're at it. It's really a small investment for a great learning/experience opportunity IMHO.
