Shure sm7 with a firewire solo pre's
i just ordered a firewire solo for hip-hop vocals only.....(the sm7)im not asking if this is a good mic, i know it is..i heard something about having to use alot of gain with some pre's....if anyone can explain this 2 me or give me your experience with your sm7 and which pre you are using..thanks

while all mics have a difference in response ive never found the SM7 to be partcularly lower than most dynamic mics

The SM7 is definitely a low-output mic. The newer SM7B is a little hotter on the output. So jack the mic pre, no biggie. Go ahead, that's not a bad thing. And rap loud. Everybody does it with that mic. Great Hip Hop mic!
