I had once played a set of Zildjian 10" A special recording hats in a shop in NYC. I thought that they were the coolest.

Apart from that, I like my K Custom darks.

I like trying different combos all the time, but my favorite is a 14" K top and a 14" Mastersound Bottom. The Mastersound gives the overall sound more of a distinct "chik!" sound that I like.

I also use a set of good ol' Zildjian A 14" New Beats. I love em' ! Nice chick but I think they sound nice half open. I usually have em' sizzling because I play 2 bass drums (rock/metal music).

a 20" earth tride (the best ping in da land)
and a 50's +/- 18 inch thin ride zildjian
real dark (looks like it was cut down as logo is lower on the cymbal)
i also wish i had my 1960 rand mcnally globe base hanhinh on the basement rafter as that was the beginning of my cymbal fetish i since have seen a shrink hint hint

I use Zildjian A Custom Mastersound 13" hats, brilliant finish. They have a "cleaner" sound with less wash and a nice "chick". They're bright.

Currently using K custom dark 14" hi-hats, which I like, but tend to get a bit lost in louder situations. Looking in to a mastersound bottom for these situations...(also, could pull a steve gadd and use the bottom K as a top with the A)

Also have some 15" A's from the 70's, which I like too, but become a mess when open, but they definitely project

I've been using Paiste 15" 2002 Sound Edge hi hats for 22 years and about a zillion gigs. They have maintained their sound and by using different sticks, I can change to any "sound" I'm looking for.

Unhappy

I have some 15' hats that came with a Slingerland from the mid 60s. Before the bottom cracked, they sounded dirty and meaty. Listen to some old stevie wonder or Al Green. They sounded like that. It makes me sad that they broke.

To JFogarty, What kind of 15" hi hats came with the old "Slings"? I started playing pro in 1963. Slingerlands were my first kit. All my heads were cowhide. Man..when it rained ,or when very humid, the tension would go all over the place! But ,when the climate was wright...what a sound. There is a lot of questions with regard to nylon tip or wooden tipped sticks. The simple fact is: woonen tip sticks have a warmer sound and nylon tipped have a more "tinging" or a sharp sound. That's it. I prefer wood but when the tip becomes a little warn, the cymbal sound becomes "mushy" if you get what I mean. They both have their place when the time is right. Later..Dr.Den

I have no clue what kind of hats they are. There's nothing on them, there just a dark greenish brown, reall ugly. Sound horrible normally, but if you get em into a studio, they sound beautiful.

On that same token, I need to replace those hats, even though I am a terrible drummer. I'm afraid to get new hats because they will sound retarded with my otherwise 30+ year old set. Should I look for some fat used hats, or are there any that sound kinda vintage that I could get new?
