Am I losin it or what? I'm a guitarist mainly, but for the past 9 months recording drums for my own stuff has been a real passion. I used to spend most of my time tracking new stuff but these days I am obsessed with getting the best possible sound out of my drums to the point of madness. It is nothing for me to spend 4 or 5 hours playing something on the drums, stopping, listening, tweaking, playing stopping.......blah blah blah. I get a great sound and vow to leave EVERYTHING where it is FOREVER and then next time change it again. Nothing seems to get my rocks off more than getting it right with the drumsound. I assume this will pass......well ...does it pass?? Any body else feel like they have been possessed by a snare drum demon?

Wow- I wish there were more like you around here! Yeah, it's an addiction like everything else. The ultimate drum sound. The Holy Grail. Getting it the best you can get it. It's a never-ending quest.

Become a drum-tech, there's too few of them in the world and in high demand.

I'm totally with ya man. I'm mainly a guitarist too but have also been obsessed with THE drum sound. To the point that my guitar playing is getting rusty. BUT, my drummng is getting pretty good.

And no...it does not pass. But it will get better.
I think the biggest factor, for me, on getting alot closer to THE sound was treating my room. Made a big difference. Well, that and learning to tune them...
Then getting some good closed cans helped with my comp settings and stuff. (I found I like the Senn HD 280's for this.)

Meh, I think it is a personality thing really. Some guys are totally after that holy grail sound be it in guitars or drums or whatever. I settled on a sound about 8 years ago and haven't looked back. I would rather play than beat my head against the wall chasing something that doesn't exist. However I will say... working in a drum pro shop for 6 years I saw all the big boys come through on the clinic circuit and a good player can make a trash can and pie plates sound good.

what brand of trash can and what alloy are the pie plates made.. should I put a bit of reverb on that?

i suggest compressing the cans 8:1 at -9.6db, attack at 200ms and release at 600ms.

EQ the plates with a low pass filter around 160hz and a boost at 3.5khz.

then take a banjo and place it behind a nice condensor mic and let the lead singer sing into the mic- frickin awesome effect...
