external plextor V's irish customs

hi I'm trying to buy an external plextor for the vf16 but seems the only place I can get one is through e-bay in the U.S. which is all ok untill I have to pay irish customs when it gets here, no offence but i dont really like buying from the U.S. I could get the same item from germany, U.K. or where ever and never pay any customs but its a different story when buying from the U.S. I get totally ripped off, so I got two questions: anyone else using this forum from europe or more importantly the vf16???, and what other burner will work ok with the vf16 that I can get over here(ireland)???, If I have to buy from the U.S. and pay those evil bastards in customs i will, but after all that what if it does'nt work here(ireland) ye(U.S.) use a different voltage so i could plug it in and blow the thing, worse blow everthing in my house...... as always any info would be great

howiya man, whats the craic? Yeah customs is a bitch, rates are through the roof. thing is, is what you're looking for actually MADE in America? Coz products made in europe but vendored in the states will usually have a voltage converter switch (I got a mic like this last week). I dunno where ya are in Ireland, but there seems to be a serious lack of pro audio dealers. Theres a place in Dublin called Audio Warehouse; they might be able to help or reccommend something. Sorry I cant be of mor ehelp. Do you know how much youd be paying with import duty?

hey man, sound for the reply, i'm not sure but i guess its made in the states coz i cant find it anywhere else, the drive fostex recommends is the plexter SCSI external CD-R/RW PX W1210TSE, im in limerick and theres F all here, i have tried a couple of places in dublin like audiocity but no joy, i never heard of audio warehouse but i'll cheak 'em out, a voltage converter sound like the job so i'd reckon it would be fine buying from the states, not sure what the customs would work out at, i got a les paul hardcase from music123 i think it was $120 and i payed just under 70euro/ about $85 to customs, either way what ever it cost i'm gonna have to get one.......

The customs charges are at the Ireland end of things, not on the US end, so perhaps a chat with your local member of parliament might help... You could have it shipped as a "gift", and perhaps avoid duty? I did this in Australia.

Lastly, make sure the motor on the Plextor is DC. I would think it probably is. Because if it's not, then changing voltage isn't enough. AC motors cannot always handled differences in the current cycles 50/60hz. The convertor doesn't change the cycles and BLAM!

Most electronic devices, and probably the CD burner converts AC to DC, which then avoids the cycles issue...

lright man, can you e mail America and ask them for the specifics? Like si it DC, will you be charged tax on it in the states etc....basically, anythign you buy in the states will ahve tax added on, you don't wanna pay US Tax and Irish Customs Tax...i'd defo check out the rates Irish customs charge before you buy, and try audio warehouse, theyre just outside Dublin city on the malahide road, google them and give em a shout.

yaeh i know its at this side the customs duty is added on but when they add it on they dont hold back, you must be having a laugh trying to talk to one of our reps in parliament you would get a better result bangin' you head on a wall, thats why in the next election hopefully the tossers will be kicked out, fingers crossed eh.... VOTE SINN FEIN

Actually, what about the "gift" option? It worked in OZ. An Ebayer might be willing to wrap it as a gift. The problem may arise as to proper insurance though...

AC 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.5A

this dont mean much to me but i take it is bad coz there is no d.c. and i presume there all like this,
i think i'll get on to fostex and ask 'em what drive do they recommend for europe/ireland.
some other drive must work....

For what it's worth, the W1210TSE went our of production ages ago. There is a successor model, but I can't remember what number it is (sorry) but it's named on a Fostex website somewhere.

(I've never been to Ireland - but I worked in Kilburn - does that count?)

i have looked at a lot of sites on the vf16 and the fostex site but since the vf160 came out its hard to get new info on the vf16 (coz i've just bought mine) apart from this site from the ppl who have one.

This is GOOD NEWS. It means the drive will work with current from 100-240Volts and either/or 50/60hz. It's probably got a built-in AC/DC convertor, but in any case, it should be fine in Eire!
