Remove wrap from drumkit.

I am getting a Tama Rockstar kit and the wrap is in bad shape.
Can I remove the wrap and refinish the wood?
What is the best way to remove the wrap.

Normally if a drum has wrap, it would suggest the woood was too flawed to be stained. So even if you get the wrap off and sand the wood, you may not have something that will look good.

If you do try to take the wrap off, be very, very carefull!!! The glue can tear out hunks of wood when you pull off the wrap.

Careful use of a heat gun (or a hair dryer) and tools such as a putty knife, etc. will be required.

If you get the wrap off and decide the wood can't be stained, you can always buy new warp!!

You could probably paint the shells but it would be alot of work.

This was my reflexive answer, but then I thought: the heat could warp or delaminate the shell. Maybe better not to mess with it, or try a solvent to loosen the glue?

I've used the hair dryer method on a lot of kits, and as long as you go SLOOOOOOOOOOW you'll be ok.

BUT - be prepared for a LOT of sanding, glue removal, etc. I tried to re-finish a few kits this way, and the other posters are right - the outer layer of wood you expose is NOT worth the effort. Many shells will not stain the same color, have bad grain, and may even have spots of missing wood. The kits I stained I ended up painting/polycoating, and re-finishing in wrap.

My '62 Ludwig kit I removed the old wrap, and applied a White Satin Flame that I got from George's Drum Shop, along with email advice from George that was very helpful. If it's a lower-quality kit, spend the $150 or so and get a killer wrap.

I already said this in another thread, BUT here's my step-by-step guide:

1) Buy a Pearl Export with wrap
2) Wait
3) The wrap will fall off on its own eventually

The kit should arrive today. If it is not in to bad of shape I just may keep it as is.

Or just wrap it with some pink fur fabric like this

I had an older premier set, used the hair dryer/heat gun method to melt the glue around the seams. Get the wrap off using this method, then use paint thinner to remove the excess glue around the shells. My shells were mahogany, and I stained them yellow. They ended up looking great.

I would go with the Jamminsam material. It's precut and applies easily (according to the video). Also, many finishes to choose from.
Too bad they don't ship to El Salvador.
