floyd rose

ive got an ibanez sa160 that im fixing up

ive put in EMG's, and i got new tone and volume pots.

i was wondering if it would be worth it to get a floyd rose tremolo

like would i have to cut the body to get it to fit, or would it just be a major pain in the ass to do?

I don't know how much of a pain in the ass it would be to actually fit the thing. But I find just having one on my guitar a pain in the ass. I'm scared to restring the thing or experiment with different tunings because I didn't want to have to

If it were up to me I'd fit a floating one instead....

It's not worth the routing, IMO. I'd get a Wilkinson, locking tuners, and a graphite nut, and call it done.

i really dont want to spend a lot on a tremolo that does'nt fit, and end up screwing the body over trying to do it

Oohh, man.... I was a rhythm-guitarist with a decent Les paul. Had been that way for 10 years, heavy on the "thud" and palm muting.
Then someone happy-as-hell showed me a floyd-rose as the new way of guitars.

I've been playing bass ever since.

Fearing, dreading the day that wank-a-tonic hits bassplaying.
I'll Probably start drumming...

You were just talking about installing a Floyd Rose. That would definetly cost $99 or more and routing would be needed. IMO, you will end up with a jacked up guitar that will be on ebay as a "project" guitar.

Don't do it. Keep what you have and get some better saddles. If that were mine, I would lock that bridge down anyway.

I'm starting to want one again. I played a Kramer in the mid late 80s gigging 4 nights a week. It was a shitty one, too. But it had the floyd and a duncan INVADER, baby! And I had my friend paint it red when he painted his IROC (I wreck) Z28.

I scavenged all the good parts off of it over the years, but I still have it in the drawer. It's all rusty and everything. When I saw how much they were to buy new, I just figured I'd buy a new one.

I think the bummer is getting someone to whack off your peghead to fit the nut, though. Maybe on the ibanez it's not a problem for you.

A regular fender vintage style trem gives a guitar way better tone in my opinion. But you can never set up a fender trem to do machine guns and motorcycles and sirens and divebombs and still come back to pitch.

If you actually use the trem, that is without question the best advice you are going to get. Wilkinsons kick ass, and you won't have to rout anything. I've been using the VS 400 Wilkinson by Gotoh, and I'm quite pleased with it (good luck finding them anywhere, though).

If you don't use the trem, get the current one blocked off so you don't have to worry about it.

I don't know anything about a Wilkinson. Can you really let the strings go so loose they're flapping and still come back to pitch?

That's really the only thing I thought a floyd was good for.

They won't dive as far as a Floyd, but far enough to get the point across. Floyds will let all six strings stich to your pickup poles, a Wilky will let 'em tap the pickup now and again; a bit more range than a USA Fender trem, I'd say. They will return to pitch, if set up properly, especially with locking tuners and a nut cut from and appropriate substance.

There are lots of things that a floater is bad at. No doubt about that. But you can work around that stuff and get some really neat textures using one. By textures I mean machine guns and motorbikes and crickets.

A regular strat trem is good enough if you just want to give a little wiggle on chords. It sounds like the Wilkinson is one that can do that in spades and always come to pitch.

I have to admit that I really used to like flapping the strings on that kramer and just letting the bar go. It would top out when the lock bolts hit the body and the springs would be honking. Then <<ring>> perfectly in-tune D chord.

Maybe I just miss it like an old girlfriend. My trems been blocked for ten years on my strat. Maybe I forgot all the headaches.

my experiance with floyd rose aint that great, kept going out of tune without any real pressure eg dive bombing etc. I don't dive.

Nah it was pretty rotten, i prefer floating tremelo's. I'm not a metal freak or indie machine or whatever. I can dive "if i have to (although don't really want to)" with a fender trem & it stays in tune as long as the strings have been stretched etc. Fukin floyd rose

musicman.....Since you have an SA series why go through all that trouble of putting a floater on that when you can sell the SA and buy an S series Ibanez with a regular floating trem or a ZR trem?? A new Floyd will cost ya about 150 depending on the finish you want. Add the routing and stuff....You'd be in a lot of $$$$$ You can pick up an S series for under 400 easy. You'd be saving money.
