adding compression to a recorded track

alright....i've got the compressor hooked up and can hear it doing its thing on my soloed acoustic guitar track. how do i record that compression onto the track permanently?

(A) Why would you want to?

(B) It's in the manual of whatever you're using. Different programs have different ways of dealing with rendering a track in place.

(A2) Unless we're talking about a hardware unit that you want to free up - Just run it out to another track.

i've looked through the manual/help and can't seem to find out how.
why wouldn't i want to do it?

the compressor is an RNC1773, the software is Cool Edit Pro 2.0. wouldn't this be a common scenario (adding external effects to a dry recorded track)? until now i've only ever used the cool edit effects. theres got to be a simple way to do this.
