New to recording

hello everyone. im new to recording vocals onto my computer. i have recently purchased an mxl -990 microphone and a behringer eurorack ub802. i was told that i have to plug in the necessary components into the mixer (dc power, mic cable, those red and white cables) and then plug the end of the red and white cables into my computer. i was then told to hit record in cool edit pro and it should work. BUT its not working. am i doing smething wrong here? can someone plz help me out?

Are you going out of the "Tape Out" on the UB802? I think what you should do is run an RCA (male) -> 1/8" stereo (male) cable into your line in on your computer's soundcard.

make sure you have your correct inputs selected in Cool Edit. First, in multi-track view, go to Options > Device Order. Once you are there, go to your Recording Devices tab. Make sure your soundcard is listed in the right side under Multitrack device preference order. Now, next to track 1, you will see several buttons...a RED "R", a YELLOW "S" and a GREEN "M". These are Record, Solo, and MUTE. just below those, you will see your input and output selector buttons. Click on the in button and make sure you have your soundcard selected there. You will want to record your vocals in MONO unless you are using 2 mics. Many people make the mistake of choosing the stereo option here and that just takes up un-necessary space on your harddrive. if you are recording a single source with one mic...record in MONO. Anyway...choose your left or right channel...and see if this helps...if you choose left and it doesnt work, try the right and see if that works before moving on to something else.
